apple video distribution

I hope the shorts area stays very tight and special, because when looking through it i dont want to see every kids attempt at a short blasting my eyeballs. As well as it just bringing down the quality and reputation of the store. Instead of people saying, ya, the shorts in the itunes store are amazing quality! It will be, man did you see how many peices of trash are in there?

Agreed. Quality control will be important. Leave the chaff for youtube, google, and myspace.

I very much agree. When I mean short films, I don't refer to things made on a zero budget as a "learning" exercise... I mean films with a decent budget.

Quality control on the store would be a sticky issue though, would be a fine line between censorship, and just wanting to put up the highest quality work.

I say that a system where it is almost like a film festival selection would work rather nicely. Minus the payment to get in of course.

I think a payment to get in plus sharing money with Apple on sales would be neccessary and would help as a filter to keep the not so good films out of thier. Apple will most likely never deal with anyone individually as far as gathering content to put online for shorts, but rather just deal with the distributors that they would be getting when more and more movie studios jump on board. That would save them on hiring people to filter out this stuff as well as training them. The movie industry would be their filter which is already in place.

Barry said it best when descirbing the Festival Circuit/Movie industry and DV movies.

as a form of media distribution, itunes is nice. great even. but what excites me is the fact that itunes isn't necessary for online distribution. i download and stream all kinds of media from places other than itunes.

these huge advancements in compression codecs that have come about in recent years and the advancements we will see in the future are going to change things very quickly. it is blaringly obvious to me that no physical medium will keep up with these advancements, and apple understands this.

this iTV thing makes the idea of downloading and/or streaming media a plausible alternative to purchasing DVD's. and i'd seriously doubt that the only materials you can view on the iTV will be materials you purchased from itunes.

every time i pick up big duplication jobs from the duplication house (and sign the receipt) i can't help thinking how STUPID it is that i have to go through that. and how accessible the material could potentially be over the web. and every time i stream a movie trailer on itunes, i can't help thinking how powerful this medium is. and when such a powerful medium becomes as accessible as it's about to become, the possibilities are endless. we are in the right business boys.

Ya, im sure the iTV will be able to play all kinds of stuff. What im really excited about is that it has the USB and ethernet ports, so wouldnt it be AWESOME to export your shorts, and anything else you want , to 1080p quicktime files, then put them on an external USB HD and hook that up to the iTV and watch all that stuff there?!

If your wireless is table enough, you can do that exact same thing wirelessly, everything you have in quicktime could be played on the iTV , its life changing for me.

Thats probably all im concerned about with this thing. I dont plan on buying any iTunes movies unless they are in HD. But if that sucker sends the 1080 signal to the TV , because they kind of danced around it during the keynote, you notice how Jobs never said your big HDTV, he just said your big screen flat TV. He was making it a point to not say HDTV. So im hoping that the signal it sends is not just a 480p signal. Just because it uses HDMI, doesnt mean it has to be a 1080 signal its sending, its just a way of making things easier for consumers.

but don't you think having a composite or s-video output would have made it easier for consumers than HDMI and component? if it only outputs 640x480, it will be a flop. i agree there was dancing going on during the keynote, but i'm not convinced that's why.

composite and s-video = 3 cables.

HDMI = 1 cable.

I think the lack of the standard definition cables migth be a sign that it outputs an HD signal , im hoping. it would be a disaster if it only sent a 480p signal.
