apple video distribution

i've been thinking a lot lately about internet distribution of video content. every time i go to the apple website and watch a h264 movie trailer in fullscreen mode, i get goosebumps. i think to myself, "god, this is amazing. anyone can do this. anyone can distribute this way. no more physical mediums." then i think about good ole' marshal mcLuhan. and about information and idea sharing. and i think we are on the verge of something much larger than we know. and that i am in the right business.

today apple is supposed to make some pretty big announcements pertaining to movie distribution via itunes. i can't help thinking that this whole hd-dvd/blue-ray argument might be a non-issue pretty soon.

still waiting on that dongle, but itunes videos upgraded to 640 x 480 h.264 now. Im still disappointed. No widescreen iPod video is a disappointment. No iPhone is the biggest for me :( even though i know it will never exist.

so this information has been released?
even if it is only 640x480, that's pretty impressive to me.

"10:52AM - It's a sneak peek of a product that will be announced in the first quarter of 2007.
I think it completes the story, so we've decided to go ahead and show it to you today."

refresh you damn peice of crap page, refresh!!!!

Ok, its a cable box type device for HDTV's . (hopes its an itunes hardware box that uses the internet to stream a completly different itunes HD, that isnt 640 x 480. its itunes 1080p! ) i wish :(

its still pretty damn cool!!

sorry i will cease the hijack of this thread, i apologize.

engadget says "its not 640 x 480, its HDTV"

i think they have to be mistaken

edit*

yup, they just edited the page to get rid of saying that it is HDTV, because even though the signal could possibly be HD, the movie is still 640 x 480.

im always right

It should HD if it isn't. With an HDMI port I'd imagine that it can support it. h.264 makes more sense for HD distribution than HD-DVD or Blu-Ray in my opinion.

To go back to the original point of this thread, I think Apple's idea is where content distribution is headed. The iTunes model makes more sense to me than another DVD-like method. I'm not saying that Apple will be as victorious in this regard as they have with the iPod and music, but they have a firm footing and it wouldn't surprise me if this becomes the norm a lot sooner than anyone expects.

It would be awesome if the trailers arent streamed from your computer, but instead streamed from the internet in 1080p HD! I would rather buy my movies from the iTV box and just stream in HD instead of buying in 640 x 480 and stream from my mac's. That would PWN all the world.

In closing from me Apple basically says to the competition "All our base, still belong to us"

Even at the old resolution, properly compressed clips looked pretty decent on TV. So 640X480 is a big deal. Be happy!:)

I'm a bit let down about the ipod announcements as well. But the "iTV" and increased resolution kinda makes up for it.

That, and they extended the battery life, so maybe I can watch more than one film before I have to recharge

Anyone know if these new iPods are available at the brick and morter Apple Stores yet? My boss just called, and ive got to get some for testing purposes.

The future of video has arrived solid state media is DEAD all hail the new video revolution. HD-DVD, Blueray all they will be used for is backup.

IPOD QUESTIONS FROM AN IPOD ILLITERATE:

Will the new video IPOD play media files that are rendered at higher than 640x480 resolution?

Will video IPOD play media files in various formats, or do I have to render/convert all my existing media streams to the h.mumble ipod format?

IF a (new) ipod will play a larger resolution file, but fit it to the 320x240 ipod screen, will the svideo output be at 640 or at the native res of the media file?

I'm trying to catch up on the video ipod state of the art :-)

I really hope Apple opens up the movie store in Canada soon.. and that they have a short film section as well. Cause this would be a great way for independent projects to make back some of their budget.

This would also open up a huge market for short films that didn't exist before. Things like AtomFilms and ThinkFilm are good n all.. but the iTunes Store reaches so many more people. Combined with the 'iTV' dealie, it could be a big hit.

I am kinda glad they didn't launch the store in HD, it will give indie projects shot in SD a slim chance at competing(if those films also have the art direction, acting etc...).

Although, as a consumer, I won't be buying a movie off iTunes. I would rather purchase an HD version of the film.

From Apple's announcements it's probably a safe bet that HD is coming. And since they allowed people who purchased the TV shows to redownload at the higher quality one can hope that they do the same when you can get a 1080p version of Pirates of the Carribean.

But, the concept of people making SD films being able to compete is an important one. Has Apple opened up and allowed indie content on iTunes? How would one go about that form of distribution? I know they've got the short films, but aren't those special cases? Either released through a major studio (like the Pixar shorts) or shorts that were nominated for an Oscar?

Indeed, so far they don't have a wide selection of shorts, but I am hoping that with a little time that will change.

And I wasn't aware that you could re-download your TV shows in the new video res, that is quite nice.

They really should open their video store up to independents. They court us to spend cash on their computers and their software to make our films with. They should give us a distro channel as well. They do it with music. Hopefully its only a matter of time before films follow suit.
