Hawking minivans? Try targeting ads to Duran Duran or The Cure fans, likely to be young parents in their 30s or early 40s. How about condoms? Look for the folks downloading love songs.

In addition to the usual targeting options of demographics and location, marketers are hunting for clues in what our content habits say about us. And Apple, with its finger on 200 million iTunes accounts, years of download history and a new mobile ad network, is letting marketers target by people's music passions and genre interests for movies, TV and audiobooks, something no other mobile ad network can claim.

Name-that-song app Shazam has matched demographic profiles with music genres.

"It certainly shows a lot of promise; when media consumption for songs, movies and TV shows are targeted with ads, there are a lot of inferences potential advertisers could take advantage of," said Phuc Truong, U.S. managing director for Havas Digital mobile agency Mobext.

Apple's iAd targeting is based on anonymous, aggregated iTunes data and proprietary methodology, said an Apple spokesman. While some third-party companies can claim they know what magazine, media and music-consumer segments consume, iTunes knows exactly what's been downloaded. "From a targeting perspective specifically, the value of the data that Apple controls via iTunes certainly differentiates it in the marketplace," said Jaspreet Singh, who leads mobile strategy for SapientNitro.

Apple has begun to carve out profiles for advertisers. To reach executives, for example, Apple suggests targeting business, finance, news and classic-movie lovers. For hybrid electric or electronics brands, Apple steers advertisers toward users with high household income who like alternative music and health-care and fitness apps...

Nothing new there. Google reads your email and sends you ads based on keywords that appear in email that you send or receive. Microsoft reads your cookies in your browser to target and tailor ads specifically towards you.

Marketing is really sophisticated and they all do it...

All true, Barry. I just thought it was a new level basing it on your music, ie- romantic music = condoms...

I agree with Barry. If you want to avoid this stuff, never go online. A lot of people are all about 'privacy' online. They want to go out to the world wide web and expect to be anonymous. In truth everything you do, and have been doing for years is recorded and stored for use. Look at facebook and how the ads are geared towards you. I see loads of 'film' related advertising all the time. Anything you like in your profile, and maybe even things that you post online, go towards this database. Personally I don't care. I just ignore the ads.

One time I joined up with a group on facebook online, for a show I worked on. Right afterwards I noticed ads for this show all around, not just on facebook.

The way I see it, you either accept this, or 'go off the grid.'

It's been everywhere for YEARS now.... your cable TV company knows what you watch and when, the Dr. next door gets the Lexus commercial & I get the Honda one.... that grocery store savings member card tells them what you buy so you get competitors product coupons...that fastpass on your car not only tells them where you are but how fast you're going from toll booth to toll booth and if it's too fast, that's right, you get a ticket in the mail! Then there are your credit card habits, cell phone, magazine subscriptions, travel & hotel bookings, etc. It's not just the internet, it's everything we do...we are marked & tracked like a herd of sheep. Big brother is ALWAYS watching!

Knowledge is power, but information is gold!

I took one intro to marketing class. The main thing I got out of it was, information about people's interests, spending habits, general habits, etc. is the GOLD of marketing. This is the stuff they would pay billions for. It's like liquid diamonds to them to get information like this. So they'll pay google, facebook, itunes, for databases to get whatever info they can get on consumers.

So yeah, they'll get it however they can.

It's one of the reasons why I always refused to provide zip codes when using a credit card at a store.

None of their business.

. . .that grocery store savings member card tells them what you buy so you get competitors product coupons

I think they even track by debit/credit card numbers. If not, the store's coupon printer is psychic, knowing I have a little kid and spits out a Pampers coupon, even if I'm just buying bread at the moment.

It has done things like more than once...to the point of spookiness.
