Apple used an unreleased 8K Canon cinema camera to show off its Mac Pro

It's only used for the green screen demo at the show. The nature demo footage was shot on a RED Monstro 8K in Kenya.

The Canon 8K footage was also pre-recorded, the live set-up is 4K only feeding to a Shogun. To record 8K there's a separate proprietary debayer box that splits the RAW signal into 8 3G-SDI streams and 4 Odyssey 7Q+ are required to record 60P in 4 quadrants, which are then stitched in post.

The information in the article might be wrong about 8K, but I am not sure why Canon would give Apple a prototype model just for 4K RAW. The camera in the demonstration is not a stock Canon cinema camera as far as I can tell. I also doubt that Canon would still be using 8 3G SDI streams for any type of 8K workflow.

And then there is this:

The demo was indeed in 4K only. As you can see in the set-up, only the MON-OUT and power supply were connected to the camera head.

For the NEON 8K it will be different, 4 x 12G-SDI connections on the side of the camera will be used to record 8K RAW.

You might be right regarding both the 4K and the NEON 8K despite what the rep stated, but that is not a standard C300 or standard MON-OUT being used in that demo. It is clearly labeled as an 8K camera, and the rear ports on the camera are entirely different than on a regular C300. I also doubt that Canon would ever release a consumer production camera that requires four cables for RAW output. I could imagine them creating a proprietary cable and port and designing an adapter for use with the Atomos. Although, I do see a row of four SDI ports on the back of the camera that could be designed for sending out the 8K RAW.

The side of the Canon 8K camera head has 7 ports, 1 x mini DP 1.2, 1 x 12G-SDI MON-OUT, 1x SYNC OUT, 1x TIMECODE, 4x 12G-SDI in a row for 8K RAW output.

Doesn't that different configuration suggest that it's possible this is a different 8K capable Canon camera?

Wasn't that similar to the way that the C500 did 4K RAW? Albeit via two SDI's to two off-board recorders.

C500 was usually connected to AJA Ki Pro Quad to record either ProRes or Canon Raw. Raw used BNC cables, ProRes 4 3G.

Or something like that.

IMO, Canon is likely to have an 8K camera out soon. In what form and configuration is anyone's guess. Price point? Nogotiable.

I would be perfectly happy if Canon just released that exact prototype camera as a C300 MK III. It would be a very easy transition from operating a MKII. Hopefully, the camera would record up to 4K 12bit 444 internally and output various flavors of 2K, 4K, and 8K through all of the various ports. I would love an R mount 8K full frame camera for future proofing, but that is probably the next generation.
