Apple to buy Vegas?? Rumored announcement from NAB

Why would they do that? The only OS it can run on is Windows. It can't be adapted for OS X -- too may underlying specific Windows functions.

Where, and from whom, did you hear this "rumor"?

Yeah I know it doesn't seem to make a whole lot of sense. Someone I know on another forum mentioned it:
"...the word at the show is that Apple made announcement that they have aquired Sony Vegas."

Someone's pulling your leg.

Although FCPro started in the Windows platform before Apple bought it.

It was a Macromedia product.

I know FCP was in Windows, but you can't separate Vegas from Windows. Part of the reason it's so lean is because it leverages so many Windows functions.

FCP, and its cousin Premiere, never did that and were never lean.

Maybe they want to buy it and bury it...like the garbage powered car or the invisible condom.

A truly bizarre rumour. Like David has rightly pointed out, much of the appeal for Vegas is the fact that it is built around Windows exclusive technologies like .NET, DirectSound, DirectX etc. - these are what makes it so efficient. Vegas will never work on Mac OS X without a rewrite from scratch.

Maybe they think that by dropping the price to $299 they will "buy" the Vegas market. Not likely...this NAB announcement was a tech preview, with no Q&A. Announce price but no real comprehension of features. More to instill FUD into the buyers to stop the bleed to Adobe & AVID while they finish the 64 bit conversion. Likely you'll see more at the June Dev Conference. The third party folks will need to be briefed on how to write to the new versions. The only thing this sowed was FUD about staying on FCP. I feel very comfortable continuing my move to Vegas for all projects. If I were to leave for 'higher end' it would be to Adobe, not Apple, given this news.

A comment in a different thread makes me wonder if someone didn't say something like "looks like Apple took Vegas's interface and functions" in snark, referring to the new FCP, and that morphed into Apple actually buying Vegas. As rumoring goes, that's a pretty short train.

Macromedia (Ubillos) wrote Key Grip, which morphed into Final Cut, for both platforms.

At least that was my understanding.

Maybe the individual heard wrong. I do know it was announced at NAB that the upcoming Sony Vegas will now support OpenCL. Maybe that's what he heard?

I haven't heard this announcement. If this is true - big, big kudos to the SCS/Vegas team!

Just watched FCP X demo.
The Mac Heads are hooting and hollering about stuff we've been doing for years.
That's a bit annoying.
This may be an NLE worth looking at.
Maybe even more sophisticated.
Love the multi film strip function!
Smooth and intuitive, maybe even as fun as Vegas?
If I bite, what would I run it on, MacBook Pro?
Think that'll handle it? Or do I need a desktop unit?
Kind of on the fence on building a new PC.
May wait now.
