apple prores 422 (proxy) says it's mbps is 45. I'm using the Lpowell's 40mbps gh13 settings. Shouldn't this be more than enough to edit this footage?

not the same mb/s your comparing. 40mb/s avchd would give you a bitrate of 400mb/s with prores. It all depends on the compression scheme, but your not losing anything by converting to different formats, unless of course its to another lossy format, which i dont believe prores is. Bitrate only really matters when your considering the bandwidth of your raid.

ProRes Proxy is lossy, it's designed for proxy edits. It's a highly compressed intra-frame codec as I understand it (so everything is I frames but they're compressed like JPEGS for example, throwing out data within the frame.) Bad. Use ProRes 422 or at the very least ProRes LT.
