Apple iPhone4 and iOS4.0 - Thread

Hey Rick,

Did you check out the new Google Voice Action (updated last week)? Can push one button and tell your phone to "call brian" or "send text message to Amanda - Hi Amanda!" or "send email to..." or "get me directions to" or .... any number of things. I've been messing with it some today, and its incredible!

Just make sure your contacts are all imported into google.

Also, did you get google chrome to phone? Sooooooo cool.

I was watching the new iPhone 4 video on the Apple site a while ago (it takes forever to load right now), they showed 720p video from it, it looked awesome for a camera phone, I couldn't believe it! Check it out if you have time.

Hey guys, don't know if you saw this but it's already starting. Iphone movie making.

Google Voice Action? Actually, no. I'll have to update and check that out! That sounds pretty awesome because I was wondering why there was no intuitive speed dial thing for my gf.

As for the Mobile Chrome, I've heard it was awesome but don't you need to install chrome on your computer? I've heard horrid things about Chrome so that scares me a bit. I have downloaded the Google Docs app...it gives you access to an online picasa account for easy access to files and pics, etc. It's damn handy.

Chrome to phone: It works for mozilla firefox too. Got it installed. When I'm at a site, or get a phone # or address, I can click it directly to my phone. Migrating from workstation to mobile just got hella cool. And google voice action is the poo poo.

I know, seen it 10 times and it has made the rounds to EVERY major director, producer and studio exec alive. I know of some blow ups to 70mm film from iPhone footage.

Did you see my post many pages back about what the internal iPhone parts cost? I cant remember but I think the cost of the cam and lens was something like $7.50.

If Apple doesn't open up the iPhone to Verizon soon (like the predicted January) their really going to miss out on people who want one, but DO NOT want ATT.

Chip, sometimes you jump on the boards with "inside information" which is proven to be either public knowledge or something that isn't so, and you seem to jump in on talks about Apple products a lot, this is why I asked. What is your source? Even if it was Apple, you wouldn't know it "was seen by the major studios and producers" because they wouldn't tell Apple that.

Just ordered an HDMI cable for my phone! Finally became available. Not only looking forward to seeing what footage taken from the camera looks like on my 56" TV but uploaded footage with a strong codec as well.

No. htc evo. Granted, the iPhone footage looks better...I still get some decent looking footage. And, I'm curious as to what a flick looks like from my phone to hdtv. But, I came down to Jacksonville to see that pitiful Bronco game before I got my cable. So, I haven't gotten to it yet. In fact, I'm in the airport now.

Did I mention that the game was pitiful?
iPhone 4?

UPDATE: Okay, I picked up a mini HDMI out cable and projected my videos from my phone to my 56" tv. I have to say the results were decent. Not mindblowingly good. But, definitely not a toy either. I can see where it would be useful. Now HTC compresses the HECK out of the footage. So, unless you used the highest setting with good lighting with the onboard camera you are going to see some major artifacts. But in an instance where you've captured something you'd like to share to the crowd, rather than have them huddle around your phone you could easily run the video from your phone to your TV with some pretty satisfactory results. Now, when using a decent codec, you could actually watch an entire movie. I compressed a couple movies to my phone's SD card to watch on the plane this past weekend. Both films looked pretty excellent on my little screen but they were pretty well shrunk...about a gig each...and they looked very good on the TV. HD good? No. They weren't HD. In fact, I'd like to do more testing with movies that are bigger/have more info. But overall, the quality looked better than a lot of SD broadcast channels. Which, I thought was pretty cool. If I've got my phone, cable and a movie I'd like to share it would surely suffice. And of course the sound info was all there so that was a non-issue.

The major caveat with this HDMI feature is that the settings are BEYOND primitive. In fact, they are non-existent. You can select resolution size or Automatic. And, that's pretty much it. Also, I couldn't get the photo slideshow feature to work. So, I don't know what a good looking photo would look like on my TV from my tethered phone. I imagine that'll be fixed in a future update. In fact, I've been doing some checking and it seems the latest 2.2 Froyo update might have inadvertently disabled the slideshow feature. But, you can use this feature for pretty much anything relating to videos. I streamed movie trailers from my phone to TV by using the IMDB app, Youtube, etc...both worked flawlessly with only a couple seconds of delay. But that brings up another negative...unlike the commercial where the phone and TV are illuminated simultaneously with the airing movie it in fact does not work this way. The phone goes black (until you touch it which will bring up the STOP, PAUSE, PLAY, FF menu bar). And, there is definitely a few second delay between the phone and TV.

Also, I checked to see if the phone camera would be picked up by the TV. It cannot. The TV never recognizes the phone's camera. Hopefully, Google (or HTC) will up the ante with a future update. I'd love to get better compression and more features.

Rick
PS As an aside, Just downloaded the JustinTV app to broadcast live over the Internet from my phone. That's pretty awesome. I wish I had known about that app when I was at the Jacksonville-Bronco game Sunday. Even though it sucked.
