Apple iPhone4 and iOS4.0 - Thread

Well, after a lot of hemming and hawing I finally pulled the trigger and picked up an HTC EVO. I literally just left Best Buy moments ago so I haven't had a chance to put it through its paces yet. I know this is technically an iPhone4 thread but since it seemed to have morphed into a smartphone thread I figured I'd post it here. My first and possibly VERY premature take on it is, it's a very solid phone. I've already been texting and even though its all touch, it's 1,000 times better than what I was used to. VERY pleasantly surprised.

So to Barry and anyone else considering upgrading to the EVO, if there is anything in particular you'd like to me to report about on this phone let me know. I'll chime back in, in a few days. It'll take me a few days to get the hang of it to be sure....

Gee, I'm surprised that it was me who bumped up this Apple thread and not ChipG.

EVO Superphone

EVO Superphone

I got an EVO 1.5 weeks ago. It's already become indespensable (sp?) to my daily schedule. Two way video calling with the front and back camera via qik is NICE. As are all the other features of the phone. It will only get more powerful with Android 3.0 and when Sprint releases 4G in local markets (coming to mine soon).

Love this thing. Reminds me of iPhone 4, but more flexible and open. I'm learning a few things (limits) of the current incarnation of the video/camera functions. LOVE THIS THING regardless.

Happy to answer any questions too.

Dillont...as a second day owner...I have a few questions.

Now, I have been playing around with this phone and there are some things that I really dig. I love the touch response when I text (strong text capabilities are important to me. I text more than I talk). I love the screen size and the cameras are pretty impressive for a phone. But, I am still trying to figure out how the hell to navigate with this thing. As much as I hated the Palm Pre, it is a pretty well designed OS so I'm missing some of the ease of having cards and being able to swipe things away, etc. Maybe after I get the hang of this thing....? But I am digressing...

But what I wanted to ask was are you having any Wifi connectivity issues? My Wifi connection is not just abysmal, it's flawed. It jumps all over the place and when I'm home cannot keep the signal at all. I called HTC, the wait was too long. I called SPRINT and they said it was the first they've heard of this. Umm, yeah right. Why can't Corporate America ever come clean? Because after I started doing some heavy Googling, I found out that this problem is common. So, I'm going to take this unit back to Best Buy to see if its a problem with this particular unit. You having issues? I can't live with a terrible Wifi feature. I'd rather have my God awful Pre back.

Hi Rick,

Testing WiFi now. Second WiFi connection. Blazing fast and no issues with WiFi here.

If you haven't done it yet, get dolphin browser HD. Awesome browser. You can use gestures to bring up bookmarked sites. Super fast.

That iPhone 4 isn't sounding too bad right now, huh?

Hey Rick (again),

It appears you're right - some EVO phones are having wifi issues after the OTA update to 2.2. It looks like some people have resolved the issue (it was a configuration thing). My wifi has been flawless since starting it to test this morning. So I did some poking around to see if I can help.

From:
http://community.sprint.com/baw/thr...9FB.app2jive1?start=0&tstart=0&reqsorting=dec

"I cannot blame the phone except that my desktop PC apparently did not recognize it after the update and would not give it the same "dynamic" IP address it had before? Or maybe it was the wireless router's fault? My laptop was not accessing the Internet like it should either. So what I did was to turn off the router to make sure it reset itself, restarted the desktop PC, and suddenly both the laptop wireless connection and the EVO WiFi connection both worked correctly again.

I think the EVO got the same IP address it had before, so maybe it had "expired" and needed to be revived or something, but it works now. Hope this helps somebody else.

Moral of this story: When all else fails (& you have no directions to follow anyhow), try "Restart"!""

Hey, dillont...thank you for looking around. I have truly scoured the net to try to find a definitive thread on the issue to see if I needed to take this unit back or if I just got a faulty unit. I still haven't gotten a good solid signal at home no matter what I try. But even if I did, I would have been suspicious anyway. I spent time at a library today and it couldn't keep the Wifi signal.

Other than the Wifi issue, I am beginning to really dig this phone. So I hope it isn't permanent. I mean, NO lagging like my old phone. Doesn't appear to be buggy at all. I figured out how to simultaneously view multiple web pages, like I did on my pre (thank God!). And, just a couple of hours ago, I began to scratch the surface of the apps. I downloaded just a couple and am blown away by them. Google Shopping anyone? It's ridiculously fast. And works with the Barcode feature which is awesome. It will also take a snapshot of a DVD or BOOK or whatever and find it instantly on the net so you can find out pertinent information like how much or where to buy it. It's helpful but I'm mostly amazed by how fast it is. And, did I say cool?

So, as of now, I think the phone is very impressive and I've only played with about 2 apps and 10% of it. I haven't even played with the camera, video camera, uploaded video using the HDMI out to my HDTV, tried the Hotspot feature, or loaded the media player. Now if you'll excuse me, I need to go solve that troubling wifi problem!

-Rick
PS ChipG, the Apple iPhone always sounded good. However, the overpriced plan does not.

I will be curious to see what the HDMI out is like. I am still happy with the Aria - no WIFI issues on this little guy. Though it's too small for some things like reading articles. But I still have the iPhone for that. I'm becoming kind of device agnostic at this point....

Micro hdmi cables for the EVO are hard to come by at the moment. Looking forward to trying it out myself. The best thing about recording video on the evo is manual controls for ISO, exposure and white balance if you want. No manual control for shutter which results in blur in low kght. Sucks. Props to iPhone for getting that one right.

Work around whatch improves things a bit is to crank up the ISO to 1250.

Yes, I'm dying to see what the HDMI out looks like as well. I've already put in an order for a cable so as soon as I get it...

And u bring up another point, this thing is great for reading. This screen makes reading so easy,
I rarely need landscape. It's like a mini-kindle.

iPhone 4 Low-light video test

iPhone 4 Low-light video test

Hey, finally had a real good test of the iPhone 4's video capabilities. I went to a concert this Tuesday and shot some video, it was pretty dark, with the really bright stage lights moving around. I was impressed at how the lens/sensor responded to the lighting and the way it looked. Check it out here.

Obviously click 720p for best quality.

And if you want an app that can do manual control of the video/camera settings (to a point) meaning you can at least lock focus and lock exposure, check out the app 'almostDSLR'. The developer said there is a new version coming, which is good, because it could use some work, but it was still nice to use.

A friend of mine is doing a short with his iPhone and I helped him do some shots last night. This utility made it SO MUCH easier.

Brandon, that looks better than a $500 pocket camcorder I have. Heck, even the audio was decent for a camera phone.

What no mosh pit at that concert?

:)

Honestly, I have no idea why there is not an option to view this at 720p. Taken from my HTC EVO...

EVO recording formats

EVO recording formats

Hey Brandon,

Here are the recording formats of the evo:

H.263
Mpeg4
H.264 (just implemented with 2.2 android update).

Manual controls for ISO, and image process like contrast, gamma/brightness/saturation. It lacks manual controls for shutter and exposure. The frame rate appears to drop when light decreases. Because of this, and a step-type auto exposure, Iphone 4 wins on video quality.

iOS4.0 has pretty much cripped my 3G, dl'ing iOS4.1 now. i do love my fiancee's iPhone 4.

Nice -- does it substantially improve the video quality? Because the early samples from the EVO's camera were horrible, and I swung back to looking at the iPhone 4 because of 'em. I'm hoping that the terrible video samples I've seen from the EVO were due to a lousy codec, and that hopefully the new h.264 will give it a performance boost about like the GH13's codec improvements have done for it.

What frame rate does the EVO record at in broad daylight sunlight? I had understood it to be 720/24p -- is it?

It lacks manual controls for shutter and exposure.
Disappointing. But with Android being an open OS, it seems like hopefully that's something that could be fixed in short order? Somebody send one to Vitaliy...

The frame rate appears to drop when light decreases.
Y'know, I'll bet you a dollar that the frame rate drop is due partly to the automatic shutter. I'll bet that as light goes down, the shutter stays open longer, and when the shutter drops below 1/24, the frame rate must drop also. If it went to 1/20, you could never have more than 20fps, and if it went to 1/12 you couldn't have more than 12fps. So if they can implement a way to lock the shutter, then that should solve the frame rate drop too (although, of course, obviously the video will be just plain darker if the shutter isn't being opened up!)
