Apple back Sony

I like my Sony HD projection screen....but if I get another HDTV anytime it will definately be a DLP screen. In my opinion these are the best pictures on a TV I've ever seen. There looks to be a progression from Plasma to LCD to DLP and then to God knows whats next. Super Duper HD+ Reality Vision 20/20 or something like that. DLP all the way for now. It's very expensive though. I've read they are using DLP technology for many of the new digital projection cinemas. In a Paris Hilton voice..."That's HOT!!" ~reservoir~

They're comparatively big and heavy though, and I believe the consumer is buying flat screens (whether they're HD or not) because they want a flat screen, not a high-def screen.

Yep. Flat screens are what people want these days...and that means 4 months worth of car payments if you go HD...

Technical specifications have never been the determining factor in which technology succeeds in the marketplace. Content, however, will be.
Of the six major studios, four are supporting HD-DVD. Two are supporting Sony's Blu-Ray, but of those two, one is Disney, which supports just about any format they can get onto (heck, Disney supported Circuit City's DIVX, so that's not saying much!) Disney is also talking about supporting HD-DVD, although they haven't announced yet. And the other studio supporting it is Sony (and its MGM division).

You are right about the content, however, not all studios are created equal and of the ones supporting blu-ray, they have almost 50% of the content.

The simple fact of the matter, as I understand it, is that the DVD duplication facilities can switch over to HD-DVD manufacturing in about 15 minutes, at very little cost. Whereas switching over to blu-ray manufacturing will take billions of dollars in new infrastructure.

This is true too. But if you believe that the content is king, then the consumer couldn’t care less about the additional duplicating expense incurred by the distributors. It’s not like they aren’t making enough money as it is. The technology to make the players capable of reading both standards is readily available and cost fifty cents. You will only be able to record/write to the standard that is native to the recorder but you will be able to play all DVD stabdards on a blu-ray player.

But the quality of blu-ray is far superior to HD-DVD, so the only way that HD-DVD can win this format war is by significantly lowering the price of the player and the media (which is good for consumers), which in all likelihood will keep the price of the blu-ray standard lower. HD-DVD players are selling overseas for approximately $275USD – not nearly as expensive as some pundits had predicted.

If you look at the companies supporting blu-ray, they're pretty much the computer companies (Dell, HP, etc) and the consumer electronics manufacturers (like Pioneer and Thomson). Not content companies. If you look at the companies supporting HD-DVD, they're the entertainment companies (Paramount, Universal, Warner, etc). Content will drive the desire to buy -- content and price. By all accounts HD-DVD is superior in content and in price.

This is the usual myopic entertainment perspective. These entertainment companies don’t want to spend any more money then they have too to bilk the consumer for every last cent. HD-DVD extends the DVD standard as far is it can possibly go, whereas blu-ray is at the beginning of its product development cycle. Three years after its release blu-ray will undoubtedly improve; HD-DVD will remain the same. Also, Sony is an entertainment company and Thompson owns Technicolor – one of the largest duplicators of current DVD’s (they have a lot to lose if blu-ray wins.) But as far as the consumer is concerned this is NOT a format war. When you purchased a VHS you couldn’t play it in a beta machine, the consumer will be able to play all DVD standards in a moderately priced player.

Sony will push blu-ray in areas where it controls (such as MGM and Columbia/Sony Pictures, and in PS2). But if only one format can survive, it looks like the smart money is likely on HD-DVD.

I'm not saying I have smart money but it looks like Fox is leaning towards the blu-ray camp, which would give it a decided content advantage, so I'm betting on blu-ray. Fortunately, like I said, this standards fued will probably be one that is actually good for the consumer driving down the price of all things HD.

But Lebroz...you are fogetting that the PS2 has the biggest installed user base in the world for console gaming machines. There are more than twice as many PS2's as Xbox's. Possibly 3x as many ~reservoir~

What is the number 1 faulty game system of all time?

guess?

do a google

PS2 yep thats right

so you see a lot of these sales are people that spent a bunch on games that needed a new system because most people that play them are dumb and wouldnt get together for a class action...

i loved sony, got the original playstation, was a big supporter, advised against sega saturn and nintendo ultra(64)

sad really, because sega made great consoles quality,

i hear the new pstwo's are made decent, but these sales you speak of are really just die hard sony fans or people who dont know better. i have been threw 3 ps2's would be more but i dont play it anymore.

sucked first one broke, sony didnt help and denied it had a problem that its my fault. got another (ps2 number 2) broke but i got a warrenty from game stop. got it replaced under extended warrenty. that is 3 ps2's THREE and that if from a good consumer(try to be)

sad really, there was a time where consoles where good quality, saturns' n64 genesis super nintendo's all lasting longer than a ps2

disc read error search google...

Lebroz...that just seems like a cop-out to me. That makes about as much sense as saying...

"You know what the most faulty car of all time is? A Ford because they made so many of them that were crappy and people went back and bought one or two more."

I still have my original SCPH1001 and I've NEVER....absolutely NEVER had a problem with it. I bought 15 of them when they came out. I still have 3. All work fine. Seems like one of my 3 would have had problems by now. I personally think that alot wear is the user's fault, but that's not to say there aren't any genuine defects. I know there are. I've read all the horror stories about older PS2's. But the fact remains that the more units a company manufactures then naturally the more problems are going to be reported. And saying that the reason PS2 is the most installed console in the world is due to people's PS2 breaking and then going to buy more is PREPOSTEROUS!! Let's give credit where credit is due. You can gurantee that if Nintendo's gameboy had moving parts and a laser it would have its fair share of "defects." Let's hear a real reason why Sony's PS2 is #1. Um...because it's actually pretty good maybe? ~reservoir~

Well, the porn industry made VHS the winner over BetaMax. We'll have to see what all the adult stuff get's released on to know who win's this war, too...

add on ...

vhs success has a lot to do with matsushita (jvc/panasonic)

marketing really they offered there equipment, there was some book an old one about the begining of porn and how sony/betamax was too expensive and matsushitas companys jvc/pana hooked up the big guns in the porno biz gave them great deals on equipment

back to ps2

everyone i know that bought the first ps2 model had theirs break on them, everyone.

now i dont know how much you play but probably not much, and watching dvds is a little different...

when you play games everytime you load the lens does crazy movements, you sid you have bought a lot of ps2's im smart enough to assume you bought them to play dvd movies(which they suk at)
\
that is not the same wear and tear as playing a game, dvd movies go from begining to end on the dvd unlike the unpredictable lens movement that goes on in a dvd game... and again anyone go to google and do a search

disc read error

dont put sony, video game or ps2 just

disc read error

it is synonomous with yep the numba 1 seller, shut up about things being mass produced quality goes down... this is frikken sony here they mass produce $30 cd players that are more reliable then the first few ps2 models, ps2 was a bad console design period. from tech to reliability,

everyone i know that bought the first ps2 model had theirs break on them, everyone.

I guess I'm just a lucky son of a gun then huh? 3 v1001 models all still working gloriously!!

now i dont know how much you play but probably not much, and watching dvds is a little different...

ALOT!! I have over 500 PS2 games. If there was a mass problem I think I would have had a problem with mine. Any of my original three. Funny as it seems the only ones I've ever had a problem with are the late model ones made in the last two years...Of which I have 2 also.

you said you have bought a lot of ps2's im smart enough to assume you bought them to play dvd movies(which they suk at)

Wrong again homie!! I bought them to make money. Remember the PS2's selling for over 500 dollars a pop on eBay that Christmas? Well...let's just say I had a ho, ho, hell of a holiday. I bought 15 and sold 12. Lucky me I guess!!

And please explain to me in detail how exactly they "suck at playing DVD's"? Funny how I've never had a problem playing any NTSC Region 1 DVD on *ANY* of my PS2's. I'll definately need clarification on this one.

shut up about things being mass produced quality goes down

Now, Now Lebroz. Let's settle down. I believe accoring to the rules here that is considered *verbally attacking* another member. And if I recall correctly...let's see...Yes I was suspended earlier this week for taking that same kind of tone in a forum with someone. I would suggest taking a time-out away for your computer for a little while then come back and play nice. I've learned to do it, so I think everyone else should follow the rules as well.

this is frikken sony here they mass produce $30 cd players that are more reliable then the first few ps2 models, ps2 was a bad console design period. from tech to reliability

I think you made my point already Lebroz. Here, let me point it out for you.

The first few PS2 models

Now when I read *few* I don't automatically assume you mean all of them do you? If so that would imply that the "entire" batch of SCPH1001's are garbage, (of which I have 3 and they work fine) so exactly what percentage would you say are junk and / or defective?

And lastly, help me to clarify your closing statement:

PS2 was a bad console design period. from tech to reliability

Again I must ask...are we talking "every" model from SCPH1001 to the last models before the PS2 slim (SCPH5000's)? It would seem that you think they all *suck* and are consistently unreliable and thus...garbage. How can this be Lebroz? How can such a useless piece of videogame-playing, DVD-watching piece of junk sell so many units and be completely SOLD OUT everywhere at Christmas time just like in 04' and 03' and 02' and 01' and...well I guess you get the point right? Funny how Wal-mart, Target, K-Mart had plenty of kid's toy's and electronics, but not a PS2 to be found? Maybe I just live in a small town.

And lastly...please for the love of this forum...Use some punctuation!! Commas, periods, semi-colons and exclaimations are your friends Lebroz!! Thank you for your time in reading this and I hope I was able to respond to all your arguments in a *respectable* way!! ~reservoir~

So can we get this Thread back on track now? Apple to join Sony in the Blu-Ray Camp. Yeah Apple!! Can't wait till some products are released so we can end the debate once and for all.

sorry broz, i gotta agree w/ reservoir...i've had my ps2 since it came out the first week and not one problem! not one! i have a 3, 4, and 10 year old and believe me, i'm surprised it's still in one piece.

and one more thing, please refrain from name calling. words as, idiot and shut up will get you nowhere and possibly banned. thank you.
