Apple announces iPhone 4s

I have a 4 and really wanted Siri to work with it but apparently it won't. That and the camera improvements would have been nice. Overall though looks like for people with a 4 can skip this generation, and people still on the 3gS will have a lot to look forward to if they upgrade. Honestly I'm more excited about iOS5 then anything else.

LOL, Siri started as a military app that run on Windows CE back in 2007.
Than Siri came out in 2009 (app store) and worked great on the G3.

2 months later Apple bought Siri and took it from the Store.

In 2003, the US Government began the most ambitious Artificial Intelligence program in its history called the “Cognitive Assistant that Learns and Organizes” or CALO program. The name was inspired by the Latin word “calonis”, which means “soldier’s servant”. Funded by DARPA as part of its Personal Assistant that Learns project, the program ran for five years and brought together more than 300 researchers from 25 of the top university and commercial research institutions, with the goal of “building a new generation of cognitive assistants that can reason, learn from experience, be told what to do, explain what they are doing, reflect on their experience, and respond robustly to surprise.”

The program was coordinated through SRI International in Menlo Park, CA. As the program ended in 2007, SRI took the knowledge gained by the CALO and some of its key players and formed Siri. SRI’s Norman Winarsky, the man uniquely positioned at the crossroads of the CALO project and the company spun off out of it talked to us about the implications of Apple mainstreaming ‘Assistant

Can you tell us a little bit about getting picked up by Apple? What was the process? How did they evaluate the company? Are any of the financials available?

Norm: I am bound by non-disclosure on all of the information from the sale that is not public including the [rumored $200 million] sale price. What is notable is that Apple closed its purchase of Siri just two months after we went public with our app. You can probably draw your own conclusions from that.’

Bingo. I'm still running a 3G with a cracked case, broken on/off button, and a battery that gets weaker by the day. I didn't want to get a 4 since I knew the next one was coming right around the corner, and I'm glad I waited. If I had a 4 already, I wouldn't be so keen. Seems like most of the iPhone upgrades are this way. If you have the previous version, it's a toss up, but if you're back more than one it's a big step up.

This is a definite pick up for me. I'm on the measly 3Gs. People laugh at me when I go out in public. "Hey look everyone! He doesn't have an iPhone 4! He can't even FaceTime! What a loser!" I'll show them. I'll show them all.

They may win me over from android....

99% because I want abetter camera.... but don't want to carry a 5D everywhere.

Take your 3Gs and go away or I shall be forced to taunt you a second time.

But will they come out with an iPhone 5 not too long from the 4S? That is the question. When will they actually release the iPhone 5? 6 months? a year? Who knows

It has 1080p output and mirror desktop capabilities like the iPad 2. Features worth considering about for people in our field.
