Apple announcements

For all you macheads around here, this is the latest so far from the now in progress Apple event:

New application called "Photobooth"

New iMacs 1.5GHz - 2.1GHz in 17" and 20". Prices $1299, $1359, $1699, $1759. iMacs come with FrontRow Bluetooth Remote, iSight

2000 music videos available from iTunes Music Store

iTunes 6.0 on its way

Apple has announced the iPod with video capabilities. 320 x240 resolution 2.5-inch screen. MPEG4/H.264. Holds "up to 150 hours of video", and uses an S-Video connection to hook it to a tv. (not too sure how if the resolution is only 320x240 unless it uses some scaling algorhythm.)

More to come...

I was a little unimpressed with the "One More Thing..." press event. I was really expecting a new Powerbook and PowerMac before the Intel switch.

But new powermacs and books would not require a special event...

I liked the announcements. The new iMac, is a nice marketing touch. They want to sell videos, but people are not sure if they want to buy them. So give them the ability to watch them in the conventional with the new remote control and itunes 6 with their new iMacs, then people will begin to see that you can enjoy a video in a 320x240 display. I would design the ipods horizontally, though, with a widescreen display, but maybe they didn't want to loose the iPod already stabilished look.

I could not care less if they released a new, slightly faster computer, but a new video distribution system? That can change my life. Really.

I think they are making a bold attempt to change video distribution as they did with music distribution, and if that is the case, maybe for us this means a lot more than a new apple toy (and vain comments about if we liked it or not). Maybe this will change the way WE will work in the next 2 years.

I find this Really impressive. Video Podcasts? C'mon, that could mean a whole new world to indie film/video production! Could you imagine a DVXUser podcast? With our zombiefilms being broadcast all over the world? This could be HUGE! (wait another 5-6 years, untill it matures - and until windows machines start shipping with remote controls)

Heck, I'm not sure I like the toys so much (I'll probably wait for the second run) but I was waiting for a video iPod as soon as the original came, not because I want to watch 3-hour-long features on a tiny screen, but because it would be really cool to be able to walk with my reel and portifolio in my pocket, to show it to everyone... You don't just send a tape, you meet someone in a party and get him/her to watch a 2 min trailer of your film right there! Who knows what a video iPod could mean to you...

I, for one, am VERY IMPRESSED.

But new powermacs and books would not require a special event...

And a new iMac does? They could have easily said "Welcome to the show. We've got some new Powerbooks and PowerMacs, and now let's talk about how we're going to change the world again."

That's all I'm askin'

I see the potential for the video iPod, and I hope it takes off. I'm just not so sure at this point.

And of course I got my "brand new" older iMac this previous weekend....oh boy, apple is going to get a call when I get home.

I had the same damn thing happen when I bought my powerbook two years ago. The biggest pain in the ass is that I'm stuck with USB 1.0. That's right, I don't even have USB 2. I was the envy of all my friends for about two weeks - then I was old news.

can you put any video you want on it? or does it have to be itunes music video crap. like say i want to rip a dvd to it?

It's got very specific playback specifications for h.264 and MPEG-4. You'd definintely have to say within those guidelines. Apple could always lock you out of the ability to transfer video to it, but I'm going to go out on a limb and say it's possible.

But, with video playback the expected battery life is only 2 hours. That doesn't seem suited to the portable DVD library approach.

Did Jarred already sell his Mac? If not, can someone get me a link for it, I can't find the thread that Jarred started saying that he is done with Macs that contained the links.

Two hours of battery time? What good is 150 hours of video space if you can't use it?
I'd say as good as downloading Quicktime 7 without the ability to purchase keys to the Pro version (at least if you are Canadian like myself).

Apple is really becoming more like M$. Glad I haven't switched to Mac.

OOPS! The dvxuser.com civil war impeding! No - I like the Macs, I don't like the direction the company seems to be taking.

err... what thread were you responding to exactly?

Haha.

I really wish we could all get together for a dodgeball game. PC guys versus the Mac fanatics. Settle this argument once and for all.

At first I was like, "hey cool. download music videos and play 'em on the go" then I realized, "oh, they're charging for the music videos!" then it hit me, "THEY ARE SELLING MUSIC VIDEOS!!!" What the ____ ? Maybe in the future I'll be able to pay for all the advertising companies want to send me! Since when were music videos a product? Harruummphhh...

How about a game of "Red Rover, Red Rover". I was always "big boned" and could Red Rover anybody!

Of course I'm on the Mac team.
