Apparently, the VG20 sucks

Why all the bad blood towards Eoshd? I've read his stuff on occasion and imho, he is simply providing information to the community. In the end, you will have to check out the camera for yourself so stop hatin and go shoot something.

Because anything written there is hopelessly biased. It is funny that the blog is called EOSHD when is should have been called PanasonicFanboy. The shiny NEX 5n has now caught his eye and everything else will be poo-poo'd in comparison.
I'm sorry but implying the NEX 5n is better than the FS100? Pul-eeze

The fact that the FS100 has a completely different sensor, has much better low light and much more powerful video processing. then to compare it to the 5N (especially since he doesn't own or rent an FS100) is pointless. The FS100 offers 8bit 4:4:4 with timecode via the HDMI. Basically RGB out. So far only 8bit 4:2:2 can be captured though (no 3rd party capture support yet).

I guess he's just good at driving page hits. Gotta give him that.

watching that video.. the 5n and vg20 both look like complete garbage honestly, it was loaded with aliasing and moire while the fs100 looked stunning.

edit: and i didnt bother reading the review by the way.

A lot of ambiguity could be dealt with in a post, new press release, or a new promo video.

I agree, John. There doesn't seem to be a senior manager or even a marketing person assigned to the roll out of this camera. A few months ago, Juan Martinez and Den Lennie were everywhere marketing the FS100. The same can be said for Jan Crittenden-Livingston and the AF100 -- while the VG20 seems to be an orphan.

Note the also-ran treatment of the VG20 at the tail end of this Signal by Sony video (after the accessory viewfinder for the 5N!).

Interesting marketing strategy. Or maybe the consumer NEX folks are so busy shipping 5Ns they don't have time for anything else ;-)

If two cams share the same guts but in a different shape body design, common sense says what? And what else does Sony have to do marketing wise at this moment with the VG20? The announcement was done, the first promo piece is done, it is side by side with the other cams at IFA in Berlin for anybody to touch and feel, the specs are out, etc, etc, etc. What else at this point. As the release date nears you will start seeing more footage, more info. That is standard procedure. And I would think that Sony knows a thing or two about marketing. They do whatever they want whenever they want. At the end of the day I am certain that all the cameras are going to do a pretty good job, including the VG20.

It certainly isn't standard procedure at other companies. *Panny has people like Jan who immediately dispell rumors and update information. *Canon and Panny both get prepro models of their cams into reliable reviewers hand months and months before release. Sony has... no one, either to update info or give a review. *It's not like this camera is scheduled to come out some time next year - it's due in 6 weeks. **

I would have long ago preordered this camera if there was even the slightest evidence that Sony was paying any attention to this camera - or the devastating review at eoshd... which is still the only available review of the camera available.

Is it a poorly structured "review"? *Absolutely. *Is it accurate about important features (lack of clean HDMI, lack of picture profiles)? *At this point, who knows? *If this were any comparable model of Panasonic, I'd expect oodles of more information at this point.

or the devastating review at eoshd...

Sony couldn't care less at that non-review. That was absolutely nothing. A few seconds of footage from a camera on a rack at a trade show doesn't remotely constitute a review. They are just some random shots from each camera. That's about it. The real reviews from real industry experts will shortly happen. There is no doubt about that.

The Sony NEX-VG20 does have Sunset mode. Just check the spec sheets.

It does have clean HDMI out.

And if you're really worried, put your mind about the missing dedicated ISO/gain button.
Besides, if it's not there, it's still not that bad since we're outta choices as consumers.
It being a consumer camera, i don't expect XLRs or ND switches, that's asking for too much i reckon.

However, i do still think, it will be a very usable camera and the 5n would make it as a sweet sidekick.
It can replace a DSLR in video work unless you're looking for a full frame feature or the uniqueness of a DSLR being a hybird camera, designed for photography ergonomics.

Any more serious in video making, jump to the prosumer/professional series of cameras.
A serious video maker wouldn't have just 1 camera in a bag, otherwise you gotta make do with what you have.

I don't trust any video shot on a trade show floor, they are shot under flo's at best, HID at worst. Also the vg20 on display was likely still pre-production firmware as the initial release is still at least 6 weeks away. I expect its quality to be at least equal to the 5n, certainly not worse.

Early 5n user vids are starting to trickle in and some are absolutely f'n gorgeous. Enough said.
