Anything similar to 24P?

Hey I am new to DVX100 and filming in general, though my classmate has the panasonic 24P camera, I was wondering if there is any other simialr camera out there that has like capabilities- I am a student and $3K for a camera is beyond me... at the moment :)

Is there a cheaper work around or smaller one? Any help would be appreciated! Cheers,

Not for true 24p. There are cheaper cameras that offer a "frame mode" that emulates the look of 24p at the expense of a loss of resolution. It's basically like shooting standard 60i and having you NLE de-interlace it. Similar look, but softer.

Get the gs400, I guess. The pro-cinema mode looks great, although it's 30fps and not true progressive scan (but it still looks awesome.)

A used dvx100 may be the way to go, though. Before the dvx100, the cheapest HD camera was 30 grand so really the price is pretty impressive for the capabilities. (There's a sony camera around 1,000 that claims to do 24p but does not.)

DV Film maker from dvfilm.com is a software that post processes 60i to 24p. Not quite as smooth or as sharp as the DVX but its close (up for debate). Its about $150.

I had a PD150, and shot a short film which I processed w/ dvfilm maker and its 24p looked pretty good. Problem is that since I shot it in 60i many of my pans were to quick (which must be done carefully w/DVX) and after the processing it got a little too strobey.

So if you cant afford/rent the DVX, and want to shoot on a less expensive interlaced cam- try the demo of DVfilmmaker. Its film look is pretty good (IMHO) and it is a stand-alone program meaning you dont have to buy any other app to run it like magic bullet.

You should also check out bigfx.com for win and natress.com for mac or magic bullet (redgiantsoftware.com) for both. You will need other NLEs to run them though.

AVOID cinelook like the plague, it seriously reduces resolution, renders like a glacier moves, and is way overpriced!
