Anything besides ProRes w/ AVCHD and FCP

Hey guys
I am about to starting putting together a 2 month road trip. There is alot of footage spread out over the week's time and I hate to upload it all with ProRes due to the size it would be. Is there a way to tell FCP to upload at a lower quality? I am not looking to make this anything other than a home video of the events my wife and I did on the road trip (that sounds kinky- my apologies). Anyway, no need for ProRes and that amount of space being eaten up.
any help is greatly appreciated

On ingest no, but you could easily setup a batch with Compressor to make all ingested clips into say ProRes Proxy.

On injest...YES. You can injest AVCHD as ProRes Proxy with FCP 7. Then recapture at higher resolution later.
Shane Ross,

Okay this is where I get confused. I have FCP 7 now. I will be buying a HMC-150 soon and I know the issues people have with ingesting AVCHD video and the files sizes are HUGE after trancode!

So my questions to you are these.

1) So you CAN, in LOG AND TRANSFER, on a MacBook Pro, transcode AVCHD into ProRes Proxy? I just thinks that's awesome and want to make sure this is true.

2) When you say recapture later. You mean after the edit is complete you transcode again to say regular ProRes and replace the files? Can you elaborate on that, or maybe point me to a tutorial about this?

Thanks
Mike
