GH4 Anyone with Metabones Speedbooster & EF 70-200 on their GH3 / GH4?

That's a pretty long zoom. I would also want to know how well the stabilization works in general. The extra reach of the crop-factor must really give it a run for its money.

I don't own one, but I've had it on my Speedbooster/GH4 combo without support during a shoot. I wouldn't recommend run'n'gun with it without support, but on a tripod with slow pans or tilts it worked fine. Image stabilisation does work, yes. Make sure you have the latest mount firmware from the Metabones website to be safe though.

HTH!

Cheers from Berlin,

Paul :)

Yes, IS works just fine but as Paul mentions above you're not going to run and gun with this and get good footage. If you're zoomed to 200mm and move even slightly your whole frame shifts dramatically. Even at 70mm it's pretty dramatic. Yes you won't get jittery footage as with a non-IS lens but that doesn't mean your footage won't shift since the zoom range is so long.

That said, best bet is throw it on sticks and you'll get great footage. It's a great combination and the image you'll get will obviously be pretty nice outdoors once you throw on some NDs (avoid Variable ND with the 70-200, definitely loses some sharpness or least with my Fader ND).

I have a 70-200 IS II on a speedbooster and GH4, and IS works just as well as on a Canon body. If you have good technique you can run and gun all day with just the bare camera, speedbooster, and lens and get great useable footage. The IS on that lens is incredibly effective, and with a steady hand that setup is a light, easy to control BRoll monster that will (with some practice) get very short moves that look like a slider or jib. It's also a fantastic concert lens setup for getting in the crowd and moving around quickly.

Here's a video to show you how good the IS is on the 70-200 Handheld with no rig:

Granted it does take some practice learning to handle the idiosyncrasies of the IS system. You have a small range of movement where the IS will keep the image tripod-stable, a small range of movement outside of that where the system will make smooth, acceptable changes to the frame, and then once you move outside of there the image will suddenly jump before the center position is reset. If you can train yourself to work within the constraints of those narrow bands where the IS adjustments are acceptable, you can get really fantastic, smooth, controlled movement with a 70-200 IS on the GH4 with a speedbooster.

Thanks for posting that video. I just kind of assumed the image would always jump. I guess you just have to get a feel for it. I don't intend to use this in a run and gun situation, but it's good to know it's there if I need it.

Hard to tell what your trying to demonstrate, due in part to the shaky phone footage, but what lens is attached to the SpeedBooster? Did you check Metabones' site to see if it's supported?

While others make lenses for the Canon mount, some quite good, only Canon manufactured lenses are labeled "EF".

Watch when I film the screen on my camera. The image moves. The image stabilization keeps resetting itself. And I have had endless emails with Metabones and they don't know what to tell me. The Tamron 70-200 lens is supported though.

Here's another example. It does it real bad right at 0:15: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0I3nIGe--T8

Might be due to the fact the camera is not moving, most IS or VC works best when the camera is handheld, which is why they recommend turning it off when on a tripod or stabilizer device. Does it act like this when you pick it up and move it around?
