Anyone using the Sony FE 28-135 f4 with the A7S?

I'm seriously considering purchasing one as an all purpose "run and gun" lens for my A7S. Since it's a full frame lens, you get a pretty good focal length coverage.

I'm curious if anyone has any thoughts opinions on it yet. I know it's started shipping with the FS7 kits, but I don't think the lens alone is available until February.

I ordered one through Sony on the 28th of November, I'm still waiting until February for the next shipment to come through. If you want one, I'd suggest getting an order in soon. As I believe there is a big back log.

I gave up on it after realising the filter size is ridiculous. What kind of NDs could you put on it for run and gun?

Waiting for mine to ship too. I'd love to see some footage from this lens.

Edit: I mean run-and-gun, documentary type footage, not NAB footage or Sony produced pieces.

How do you zoom with this lens? are there controls on the lens to zoom seemlessly?

I have one on order. I should have it here in week or so. I plan to use it primarily on the FS7 but I will use it on the A7s as well.

As far as I know there is a power zoom rocker on side of the lens, it will also work with the FS7 zoom rockers. It also has a manual zoom ring and there is a real iris ring this is a huge improvement. And it has the same style focus ring as the EX3/1 cams, that is either auto/semi manual or full manual with hard stops for repeatability. This is very nice.

I will know more once I have the lens in hand. And when I do I will post my thoughts here.

Looking forward to your thoughts Olof. On paper it looks like a great video lens, parfocal, no breathing, fully manual, power zoom, silent motors, AF engaged by sliding the focus ring and so forth. Wish it was a tad wider 24 instead of 28mm, but that's not a dealbreaker for me. Been looking for a FF ENG type lens forever. This fills that void.

Ditto. ND aside it looks like a perfect match with the A7S. From the still samples I've seen (maybe after in-camera autocorrection) it has very geometric distortion control also.

I'm curious if the full manual options are really that. That is, I've heard that when you zoom "manually" by turning the zoom ring, it's actually using the motors to zoom. I wonder if that's true, and if so, if that applies to the aperture ring as well.

I got to play with this lens briefly at CES on an A7s. I was very impressed. Seems like a bargain for what is essentially a mini-cinema lens for the A7s. it's big for an FE lens but smaller than a Canon 70-200 and even Sony's FE 70-200. Seems to play very nicely fully kitted out with a Matte box, rails, small cage and it's still really not that big. It's got OSS and Power Zoom that seemed to work well. Focus 'felt' manual to me, didn't have that disconnected fly-by-wire feel. I think it's probably an excellent and economical choice for the FS7 and AS7. I don't think I'd take it on vacation with me but for real video work it's a total keeper.

hum...i played with it at Inter BEE in November and didn't like the "disconnected fly-by-wire feel" of the manual focus.
Just to be sure i wasn't doing anything wrong, i asked the Sony Rep to set it up in full manual, same result. For me that was a deal breaker.

Also, the power zoom max speed is quite slow.

Obviously it was a pre-production model and i hope they fixed this, but i would recommend you check for your self before ordering.

That's disappointing to hear. I wouldn't mind fly-by-wire for zoom or aperture so much, but focus (for me) needs to have that connected, manual feel.

if you interested only for video, you can try sony sel G 18-105mm f/4 OSS
I have A7s and this lens and is a killing combo.

Excellent OSS , 27-155mm (35 eq) in crop mode, great picture, very sharp.
Its very light and cheap too.

The only thing you loose is about 1 stop in noise but its not a big deal with A7s.

Here is a sample with this setup...

I've owned the lens since the middle of February now, I'm very impressed. It's incredibly sharp through out the zoom range and the fact it can hold focus is a life saver.
If you own only one lens for the a7s make it the 28-135, you won't regret it.
