Anyone Using Black Magic Hyperdeck Shuttle with EX1r? Looks Good!

Well, it collects 12GB per minute uncompressed. So you need a real fast SSD's. A 500 GB model will be filled up in 40 minutes. You also need a fast PC with extreme fast I/O. And a lot patience. Compression is not all bad, it keeps the datastreams manageble.

I shoot with Sony EX!r.....and am looking for an external recorder like the Kipro Mini....but this one is so much cheaper....just checking with all of you?

Consider the Atomos Samurai (which I just picked up).
http://atomos.com/samurai
Has a pretty decent quality touch screen, records direct to Prores LT/433/HQ at up to 4:2:2 10 bit via HD-SDI (not 4:4:4).
With a 750GB HDD, I can get over 18 hours in LT, almost 13 hours in 422 and 8.5 hours in HQ.
Plus it uses exFAT so there are no longer the 4GB file limit associated with FAT32 format media.

Pretty good value at $1595 USD | €1145 Ex.VAT | £995 Ex.VAT
I'll be testing/using mine more extensively towards the end of Jan and into Feb.

It is cheaper because it does little to no compression. That means that it eats up storage space like there is no tomorrow.
And it records directly to SSD. Which means that the media is quite expensive, also, making the cost of recording geometrically multiplied.
Now if you need only short-form very-high definition recording, the Hyperdeck seems like an ideal solution.
But if you are recording long-form (such as live events, etc.) and/or storage cost is important to you, then it isn't as attractive.

Now it seems quite possible that Blackmagic Designs will bring out updates for the product which will support more compression (if the hardware is capable???). And it seems also quite likely that the cost of SSD will continue to drop (as it has for DRAM, FLASH, and mechanical hard drives). So I expect that the Hyperdrive will be more attractive in the future.

have u considered - Convergent Design nanoFlash? its for sure the smallest one i believe, not the cheapest unfortunately.... but 4:2:2 same codec as sony ex and Mbps rate to choose! i just dont know if its 10bit or 8bit, but i dont think EX1r has 10bit out, probably not ex3 either!

The original Hyperdeck Shuttle was uncompressed-only, and did eat hard disk space at a prodigious pace. The new Hyperdeck Shuttle 2 also offers uncompressed, but adds DNxHD recording as well, which is a 10-bit 4:2:2 compressed recording that takes up much less space. Still a lot higher bitrate and higher quality than the EX1's native codec, the native codec is 35mbps 8-bit 4:2:0, the DNxHD is 10-bit 4:2:2 at (I think) 220mbps, so a hyperdeck shuttle 2 could be a quite inexpensive way to substantially upgrade the quality of EX1 recordings.
