Anyone used SxS alternative? F5 Documentary

I just can't justify paying £1000 for a 64gb memory card. BTW do you think the F5 from the specs you have seen, will be a great documentary camera?

Plenty of people use SDHC adapters and Class 10 cards with the F3/EX1/EX3. They may work fine in the F5 with the 50Mbps recording mode, but I suspect that if you want to use the high end codecs or highspeed shooting modes of the F5, you're going to have to shell out for the new SxS cards they're producing.

Douglas could you give me a link to the sony one you use? and guys could you please send me a link please? Viddovation i will invest in the SXS PRo plus eventually, unless there is a sd Card alternative. I just think it is really expensive. I would probably rent the cards if I was filming a documentary for a broadcaster, but for my own work I will use SD cards.

So do you think the Sony F5 will be great for documentaries? I am in two minds between the F5 and C300..

If your already heavily invested in Canon glass the C300 is viable route even though I feel it's way overpriced for what it gives you, on paper at least. It is quite compact though and has some nice things going for it. I primarily film docs with my F3, Zacuto EVF and a Samurai and have no issues. I'm planning on upgrading to the F5 and will lose the Samurai in the process. The most appealing feature of the F5 for me is the ability to go in-camera from XDCAM HD up to 444 10 bit SR @880mbs! That is insane flexibility without even mentioning the 4K option and I wont have wires dangling to a recorder and have to power three different devices. Basically I think the F5 will be good for nearly everything except ENG of course.

thanks for the link douglas. and FotoJorno I havent invested in any lenses yet as I wok as a studio camera operator, but would love to work on documentaries and some commercials, so the F5 seems ideal for me. what lenses do you use for documenary work, can ou recoomnd a good run and gun one? I found the SCL-z18x140 lens. But it has not got a zoom rocker on it and I am worried that it wont be usable on he F5.

On my F3 when recording internally, I normally use adapters (I have Sonnet, Hoodman and the old Kensington adapters) with Class 10 SDHC cards. I doubt that solution will work with 50Mbps 4:2:2 XDCAM on the F5/55. Both cameras definitely will require the new SxS cards for XAVC or SR recording.

If the situation DEMANDS the use of a servo zoom I'll use my EX1, but that would be more along the lines of a news assignment. For the F3 my #1 lens I go to is the Nikon 17-55mm 2.8, complimenting it I use the Tokina 11-16 2.8, Nikon 85mm 1.4 ais and a Nikon 80-200mm 2.8, all with the Optitek ProLock adapter. Do not waste your money on any other adapter because you'll wind up upgrading later. For new clients of mine I explain clearly that if they want servo powered zoom shots, a F3 or most any other cinema camera is not the right tool for the job.

*The new Fujinon Cabrio is the exception and is a dream come true but the price is a nightmare. Definate rental only.

Thanks guys for your advice. I think I will go with Nikon lenses on the F5. I think they will work best for documentary work, as I could use them manually. The new Fujinon Cabrio looks great but its price is crazy, could buy a house with that money. Thanks guys for your feedback. I cant wait till the 28th thats when we will get proper information on the F5. I will invest in Sxs Pro + media when I needed. I hope the adapters can handle 50mbs 4:2:2 or 4:4:4 that would be amazing.

thanks. i didn't think they were really out there yet, but i'd only really looked at Abel.
