Anyone used Digidesign MX002 or Marantz PMD 660 Recorder?

Hey guys,
Just found a Digidesign MX002 in our AV room. Anyone used it? Can be used as a standalone mixer apparently.
Also a Marantz PMD 660 CF recorder.
Thoughts quality wise? Don't have cables so I can't just plug them in and test them yet.
THANKS

No, the 002 can NOT be used as a standalone mixer. In fact, it's not a mixer at all. It's a AD/DA interface for Pro Tools with 4 mic preamps built in. The faders and knobs are for controlling Pro Tools.

I'm not even sure the 002 is supported by the current version of Pro Tools. I know it won't be with the next version.

Then why do all the reviews say that is can?:

Yes you can use the Digi 002 in standalone mode, chapter 10 in the user manual.
You do not get all the abilities you would using it with ProTools, but it can be used in limited capacity as a mixer.

You can also install Digidesign drivers and the 002 should show up as an interface other programs can use.

I've never used the 002 as a stand alone mixer because of its limitations as a stand alone mixer. I've used it with PT and didn't really care for it. I've gotten so used to not having a control surface that I'm faster without one and do better with just a keyboard and trackball.

That reminds me of when I got my Pro-control back in 98, I ended up using it as a control room volume knob because I was faster with the trackball, I think I might have used the transport once or twice, for the money I ended up selling it in short order to buy some Spectrasonic 610s... memories.. sorry for the left turn.

Thanks guys, I appreciate that the 002 will have shortcomings but seeing as we can use it for free I'd like to know what sort of quality I can expect. I assume being Digidesign the preamps would be of good quality, etc?
THANKS

Thanks Dave, did you not care for it in terms of ease of use or sound quality? If it's a bit cumbersome but has nice pres and so on I'll definitely try it out.

Well, it's kind of easy to use if you are familiar with how mixers work, but Digi pre's never impressed me. They'll work, and since it's free, it's definitely better than nothing, especially if you can't go out and spend a ton of money on a great pre right now. I wouldn't say don't use it, but if I were in your situation, and had the cash to get better gear, I'd do it...but if this was all I had, and I couldn't get anything else, then I'd be happy with it.
