I use the Cartoni HiDV1 and love it. I think the legs are the same as the one you are looking at but the head is different. Cartoni stuff is usually good from what I hear.

As far as the legs go they are great. Supper fast set up and light.

I would sugest you look at the HiDV1.

That head looks suspiciously like a dressed up Bogen 503 HDV. I believe that the Vitec Group owns most of the major tripod companies http://www.vitecgroup.com/group/broadcast_systems.aspx and they have been getting sneaky, selling Bogens with Vinten badges on them as low end Vintens. Perhaps they do this with Cartoni as well. Thankfully they have not done that with Sachtlers or O'Connors.

I don't think that they own Cartoni but I would be curious if Cartoni sub contracted this out to Manfrotto (Bogen in Italy) since Cartoni is Italian also.

News, the HiDV1 looks like a really nice tripod but its out of my price range. Im looking at spending $850. If this is a dressed up 503, should I just look at the 503 for less money? Would adding $200 to what I can spend really get me a better tripod?
 
THe only reason I havent purchased that this very second is that it doesnt have any tilt or drag controls. I dont understand how it can be considered a professional tripod without these things. Am I missing something?
 
Then buy a Bogen. The Libec is much better but yes, it does lack adjustable drag controls. But have you read this? http://www.dvuser.co.uk/content.php?CID=150

My friend has a Libec, a much smaller and cheaper model than the LS-38 and I have used it with my HPX170. The Libec I used retails for $179.00 and it was better than the $500.00 Bogen I have as my spare to my Sachtler.

You really should bring your camera to a retailer and try it.

B & H is currently out of stock. What is another respectable/safe place to buy from via net or phone with CC? Im almost 100% positive that there isnt any kind of retailer in western NC I can go to.

I also have the Libec and its the best news/doc tripod for the money. Small light, fast setup and its sturdy. Nice smooth pans and tilts too.

Usually goes out of stock once in a while due to its amazing popularity. If you go anywhere out side the USA you will see these Libec tripods everywhere.
 
I've got a Cartoni Action Pro...but mine is the old model that is now discontinued. I should note that the old version cost $1000 new and the model replacing it seems to have the same specs but only costs $875 new.

I LOVE the sticks...an absolute pleasure to work with.

The head? It could be better. I'm thinking of either investing in a beefier mitchell base tripod/head eventually, and letting the Cartoni be a backup, or just buying a better 75mm head.
 
I use the Libec LS38-2a and it creams all over the Manfrotto/Bogen 503.

The smoothness is way superior and the legs are rock solid.
 
if you can get your hands on a used bogen 510 head. it does everything to want (WELL) and within your budget.
