how is it? I'd love to have a user-friendly, fast, and configurable dvd creation app...everything so far seems needlessly slow or dumb.

Yes, Encore is pretty much the same app that was included with Production Studio versions 1 and 2 (or whatever it was called previously) if you've had experience with that.

I think Encore is a fairly good mix of fast, user-freindly, and configurable.

There are some templates. They are OK -- I've seen better and worse.

The best thing about it is its integration with photoshop and after effects. You can start with a blank menu or a menu template, open it up in photoshop, and move things around as you please.

You need to understand subpictures pretty well, though, to create interesting menus in Photoshop. Things need to be set up specifically with layer naming conventions in order to work right.

In fact, I'd think it would be difficult/impossible to customize Encore menus without Photoshop. In my opinion this is a good thing. You don't get much more standard than Photoshop for image design. I'd rather do my design work there than use some wonky watered down built-in editor.

If you are looking for moving backgrounds, you can bring in something from After Effects or edit one of the templates in after effects.

Best feature of Encore CS3 over previous version -- inclusion of Blu-Ray support. Very nice if you are working with HVX footage.

You can also encode right from Premiere Pro to Encore (with or without menus).

As previously stated, Blu-Ray's an added plus . . . my Pioneer BDR-202 arrives tomorrow (will have to let you know how that goes).

encore is great. it uses a photoshop layoput which essentially treats all menus as photoshop files(because they actually are), and it lets you take any one of them directly into AE for motion menu creation, and lets you have multiple timline elements ect. ect. its very versatile and smoothly integrated with the adobe platform products. ive never really had any complaints about it. now with CS3 you can use one project to export a blueray, DVD, or flash just by specifying what you want to make with your project. ...anyway, IMHO its a great app

With Encore's linking with the CS3 apps, particularly with Photoshop, it makes creating DVDs a breaze. Download the demo off the Adobe site and play with it, that's the best (and safest $ wise) to see if it is the program for you. Best of luck!
