Anyone try Ultra Contrast (or equivalent) filters?

Has anyone tried using the Ultra Contrast style filters in front of the d90 to lower contrast, and possibly put more image into the image? Essentially doing with a filter part of what some of the custom curves recommended by others do by lightening shadows and bringing down highlights into a more useable range for the sensor to capture (and giving more data for the VBR compression to compress).

Or do these filters soften an already soft d90 image too much?

they don't soften the image at all, that's what sets them apart from regular locons. i haven't tried one with the d90 but on several other formats, and they do what they're supposed to do. give it a try.
