Anyone try non-CD SSD's on the Q7 yet?

I believe the 7Q just won't recognise the drives and not run.

Which is is why I hope Atomos will eventually support FS700 2K/4K ProRes. I just can't swing a 7Q with the codec cost and the expensive media, it's just too expensive and I don't need raw.

The Odyssey7Q will not function with any drives other than our own. It will refuse the non-CD drives. There are three reasons for this:

- We test every SSD at our factory on an Odyssey test bench system. This ensures full compatibility.

- Our SSDs meet required data rates. Many manufacturers will list specs for Read/Write speeds that are, shall we say, "wishful thinking." They represent the SSDs when they are brand new and empty. Run the SSD 500+ cycles and the speeds drop. Fill the drive beyond 50% - even on the very first use - and the speed will drop. If the write speed drops low enough it means dropped frames and possible data corruption. Your material is lost or ruined.

- There is a power save mode built into our SSDs. In the event of a power failure during recording (battery shutdown, someone pulls the cord, etc.), there is enough juice in the SSD to close down the file. When the Odyssey powers back up it will automatically rebuild the SSD directory and your footage is safe. On a drive without a power save function, the file would be corrupted and you would lose your shot. What's worse, there is a very strong possibility that the ENTIRE SSD could be corrupted and all of the material lost. That could represent hours of material, a freakin' tragedy. The power save mode in the Odyssey SSDs directly integrates with the control functions of the Odyssey7Q so that we can protect your files and rebuild the data directory afterward.

Convergent Design does not make a lot of money off our media. It's certainly not our primary business and that's not why we insist on the use of our SSDs. The fact is that we have only had a single failure in the field of one of our Odyssey SSDs, even after having shipped more than 5000 units. That's simply unheard of, because they are really that good. This is your footage, the whole point of all your hard work. It really is worth it to get reliable media.
