anyone tried this field monitor?

I am thinking about this, because of the hi res and sunshade and Sony battery config. (I have 5 redundant sony batteries) the Elvid RigVision CM-7L 7" Field Monitor with Shutter Release . I would prefer a sdi connection but funds don't permit ATM. Any thoughts or other suggestions which won't create financial havoc? Cheers!Rod

This looks more like a photographer's field monitor, as it has a shutter release and virtually none of the normal video features.

For a low cost monitor I would take a look at this: Lilliput 7" 663/O/P 1280x800 IPS Peaking Focus HDMI

You can get different battery plates for this monitor so you can use the longer lasting and cheaper large Sony and Canon batteries.

My 2p: Be cautious about cheap monitors. From a brief look at your website, this is a business for you - not a hobby.

The Lilliput may be brilliant - but with the law of probabilities, probably not. I've had a couple of their monitors in the past. One sits in a box doing nothing and the other went back to the dealer, because buggy firmware meant it couldn't be even vaguely set up using the blue-only channel.

They're not particularly rugged and, at some point, you'll very possibly get let down when you can least afford it.

Your fortunes will probably change - so my advice is to wait until they do or borrow some money and do things properly the first time. Talk to a dealer you trust, try it out on a proper shoot and spend some proper money.

Ben.

Thanks Ben, good points. I have invested heavily in my business and I would really like a HD sdi connector I must say, having had a really bad experience with tugging a HDMI lead accidentally and causing damage! Maybe I will bite the bullet and get what I really want. (after all, lack of ready cash has never stopped me before!)Cheers!Rod

Not sure about your budget but my SmallHD 7" OLED has served me well. I have the HDMI version and it cost around $1-K.

If you've got a bigger budget, then this is what I recommend: Marshall Electronics V-LCD70MD 7" Monitor with HDMI and Modular SDI Upgrade Option : $795

I bought one of these back in June, and it has been the best monitor I've used to date. The 800 nits brightness is very handy when shooting in daylight. It can be upgraded to SDI or you can buy the SDI version which is about $200 more. I use the big Sony 970 batteries with it and get about 6-8 hours of use from each battery. ( you can buy generic 970 batteries for about $40 each )

I've got a Lilliput and it's a really useful director's monitor, but not much else. At a push you can use it for focus but forget about colour and exposure. Having said that, I'm glad I bought it - it's so cheap that it's good to have in the bag. I use an EVF for me, but get the Lilliput out almost every time to add to the chain for the client. If you want a good monitor (as opposed to EVF which I much prefer personally) for operating, don't scrimp - go for the a TV Logic or similar.

Now that is nice! I have 5 currently redundant Sony npf960 batteries which will do nicely too. Does this unit also charge the batteries ? (I have no charger).
Cheers!

hi thedingo, well I am now hooked on the Marshall SDI version. Is there any difference between 3g-SDI and HD-SDI? -my research indicates that as far as the AF100 is concerned, they serve the same function, so a standard HD-SDI cable would be fine? (and are there any differences between cheap and expensive cables on signal data?(I guess expensive cables are better built of course)Rod
