Anyone tried shooting 1080 60i and then de-interlacing?

Ok the deal is.. I want full 1080 resolution, and the option to do the super smooth slows - but on top of that I need the look of progressive footage. Since you can't shoot 1080 60p, couldn't you just shoot 60i - use cinema tools for the clips you want to slow, and then de-interlace both the natural speed and slow clips to get the progressive look.

Has anyone actually tried this, are there any major drawbacks vs. shooting 720 60p - other than additional render time?

Thanks

Yes, you can do that but the problem is that you won't get full 1080 resolution after you deinterlace. Either you'll discard 50% (one field) of the resolution or you'll need to use some form of field blending which would give you a smoother 30p look and also reduce resolution.

Whenever I do PAL DV slowmos I always deinterlace the footage from 50i to 50p and then slow it down for 25p delivery. When you slow a clip down you'll have to deinterlace it anyway so there's no disadvantage to doing it this way. Deinterlacing using blending for this method, however, doesn't make sense, you need to completely discard one field and then you could interpolate.

Andrew Kramer at VideoCopilot.net has a great tutorial about deinterlacing footage from interlaced to progressive with interpolation in AfterEffects: http://www.videocopilot.net/tutorials/deinterlace_in_ae/
