ok... so I am mostly a director/editor. I am also a supergeek and love all things digital new and shiney. I love resolution and quality. And I really dig this camera for the price range and comparison to everything else in its class.

So now we're all gonna be editing DVCproHD footage at home. Here's whats killing me. What's the best form of distro, what's a good model for really taking advantage of this. I am speaking strictly the indie narrative market. Obviously industrial and doc have different requirements.

I mean, sadly, we have two ways to go... downrez or uprez. going down sucks because it's DV or worse. But for a while, that's what everyone is going to do. Festivals are still going to screen in crappy SD formats or film (or HDCAM). So the other option is to uprez, ideally once you have a reason to. But this is all very sad. Lots of people have HDTVs at home that at least to 720p, if not 1080... but what's lacking in todays market is a consumer level playback device. Sure HD-DVD and Blu-Ray are on their way, but they're in war right now, and people won't uprage right away, etc... it's gonna be a while folks.

I almost wish they'de put a P2 slot right on new TVs :)

Anyway, I am curious to see peoples thoughts on a good post workflow utilizing this camera. I am thinking of using it for a low budge horror/western that I was going to shoot with an F900... but if I can minimize costs and still get a reasonable (if not better) quality out of this camera, then I can put the money into the Special Effects, and post. etc...

thoughts?

Web formats like WMV-HD and H.264 are good and can fit feature lengths on current dual layer DVDs. Terminator 2 in WMV-HD is pretty nice. You can also rent a DVCproHD deck for a day. For the home, WMV, DVD or HDDVD is the only way I can see right now.

I think the HVX is really going to help with budgets. After you make your initial investment, you never have to pay for "stock" again! That's huge. As far as distribution, Blu-Ray is right around the corner. Unless you've got a feature in your pocket and you'll be done with your post before May or so, it'll be ready when you are. CES is happening in Vegas as we speak and all kind of BD devices have been announced, all slated for June delivery.

Please refrain from making any HVX-related "delivery date" jokes. :)
