Anyone successfully editing PH mode clips longer than 1 hour?

Onwhat platform? What workflow? As far as I can tell, nothing is successfully doing this yet...? (Except maybe Edius)?

No problems using Mainconcept/Panny's transcoder with long (75 minutes) footage in PP CS3 (windows).

PH being the highest bitrate setting? Yup, sorry, footage was 720p/30. For the most part i either shoot @ 30fps or 24fps in 720p.

Hmm studio1972 that's a bit disturbing. I just placed an order for my HMC150 and we're going to be using it for a documentary. So that's about every 22 minutes or so, 4GB? Anyone know if Panasonic's doing anything about this or if there's a workaround other than just cutting before any clip goes beyond 22 min (or whatever that time limit is - maybe you can tell me studio1972)?

Panasonic doesn't have to do anything about it - the footage works. FCP needs to be updated to properly support this new product.

Play the footage back in the camera and you'll see that it's flawless. Any glitch has been introduced by FCP, not by the camera.

Thanks Barry. Well, Apple+FCP.. if you're reading this.. if you're out there somewhere.. let's see some software updates!

It's not surprising... up until the last FCP update, my SD9 camera wouldn't import. It would crash so I had to use that Voltaic and a few other things. Now I'm just planning on capturing via the intensity card..

So far, I love the cam.... cheers

It's just a small matter of time before NLE designers update their software's compatability. The only company I'm expecting to drag it's heels is Sony with Vegas because there's an underlying conflict of interest in adding compatability for a competing camera manufacturer. After years of using Vegas I finally decided to download and try out the trial version of Edius 5 ;)

Using a lower bitrate would give you a longer clip before hitting the 4GB mark. Maybe the glitch doesn't even happen with lower bitrates, but I have not tested this yet. The glitch does only last about 10 seconds so there is the option of using a cut-away I suppose, but it's hardly ideal TBH.

I must say though, I do love the camera and do not regret buying it at all, I just hope FCS3 sorts this out (probably in the spring) and also adds BluRay support, otherwise I may have to go over to Premier. It's cold and miserable in the north of england for the next few months so I won't be filming many weddings until the spring.

Hmmm... I'm not 100% sure I've watched every second of every video, but a lot of people have looked at the end results of many long non-PH mode vids I've shot and so far, no personal evidence or 3rd-party reports of glitches in anything.

I'll second (third?) being happy with the cam... it's just frustrating waiting for FCP to get up to speed, 'cause I don't want to spend money on an interim solution only to have an FCP fix (or upgrade) show up the next day...

FCP and Glitches

FCP and Glitches

If I'm understanding what Barry is saying, if the footage looks good through the camera (I even plugged the camera into a big screen to make sure) and looks great - which it does, but these Glitches occur in a Mac (I tested the same footage in FCP and FCE on a Mac Pro and a Mac Book), than it is something in the Final Cut software causing them? Would purchasing Toast 9 eliminate this problem?

(I had this on a commercial I shot where 4 / 48 short clips had glitches, but not on the camera)

Thank you!!!

Well, it's not a bad bet -- but in this case, Vegas 8.0c supports the footage, so they're ahead of the curve.

Yes that's what I'm saying. And I don't know whether toast would fix it or not.

When I try to use Toast, it seems to treat each file as an individual clip, whereas Log & Transfer realises that several files combine to produce 1 large clip. So Toast doesn't improve matters as far as i can tell. Plus it seems to be much slower at converting into AIC.

I think that this problem just needs Apple to talk to Panasonic and make a few changes to log and transfer, it's not like it's that far off working! When I get a chance I will try a long clip in a lower bitrate mode to see if this works ok.

David, I would agree however the support is mainly for the Sony flavour of AVCHD, the Panasonic flavour tends to still behave somewhat erratically when subjected to the same level of editing we do with HDV (CC, time-stretch etc...) Maybe at this stage of the game I should feel lucky that there is some level of AVCHD support for Vegas compared to the experiences others here are facing ;)
