Anyone still not upgrading?

Not upgrading. No problems...just too many cameras/lenses, not enough time. :) Love my T2i, GH13, S95, LX5, Iscoramas, other anamorphics....need to focus on making movies....doesn't mean that I
won't go with a GH2...but just not now. :)

I would think the GH2 is currently the best camera to use with anamorphics as any vignetting could easily be dispatched with crop mode.

I started a huge thread on this a while back that got so many people up in arms that after 25,000 views and 300 posts it got shut down, but my basic feeling was that it's NOT a needed upgrade for PROPERLY hacked gh13 owners. Now all sorts of people went bat s**te and started posting all sorts of reasons of why I must certainly be insane (which is true.. I am insane), but that does not effect my eye for image quality. What I think it comes down to is that many people's hacked GH1s are not set correctly or there is just plain old variance in the quality of the sensors because I do NOT get banding issues with my hacked gh13 and the detail in the wide shots of high moving images like ocean water and thousands of people on a beach or at coney island held up better than the GH2 - but in other shots the GH2 had a slightly nicer image (locked down on sticks with just one subject for example) and obviously the iso is improved. So while I don't think it's a 'needed' upgrade, I will end up getting one just to toy with it and yet another cam to shoot multiple angles at once. Hell... it's cheap and the rates I am getting for one day of GH13 shooting I can buy 5 gh2 bodies no problem. I want the 24 mbits upped though. It's just not enough for certain situations no matter how advanced the codec has gotten. Now the af-100 hd-sdi out into your format of choice is where it's really at though if you wanna talk high end high end without spending INSANE money on the goofy red and the imaginary vapor ware scarlet that is now dead.

After mulling it over for a month, I've decided not to upgrade (cancelled my order). It was a hard decision since the GH2 has some great features. The picture has significantly improved at ISO 800+ and the tele crop feature opens up so many possibilities. Some things that I was looking forward to kind of fell through though. The rolling shutter seems to not have changed and the follow focus feature has been pulled. There are also some features added that weren't that important to me like live monitoring (I do know how important this is for other people). Manual audio is a plus, but it doesn't really matter for me since I have a separate system for sound. The improved AF is great, but I'm just a casual still shooter and the current AF speed isn't slow for me.

The banding on the GH13 didn't bother me so much since most of my shooting is done at ISOs under 800. It also didn't help to see reports of horizontal banding on the GH2 at 1600 and 3200. One post that was swaying me towards the GH2 was Hunter Richard's test while he was sick (great post btw). The GH2's static shot looked much better, but I've seen other comparisons where both cameras looked nearly identical (http://vimeo.com/17491529). I like how the GH2 resolves more detail and the dynamic range is a hair better, but these factors weren't enough to make me switch and spend another 400-500 dollars.

I'm not trying to start a GH1 vs GH2 war, but I just wanted to see if there were other people in the same boat as me. Maybe this post will help people who are still on the fence.

I'm not upgrading mainly for two reasons: Need to invest on lenses right now, so my funds are better directed this way.

The second is the same as you said, just shot a web series with the GH1 and I only had to use ISO 640 us in ONE shot (the rest was all sub ISO 500) and that was indoors shooting a tight close-up with the 14-140mm.

I had one problem while shooting 60fps (@50mbps) at 1/400 shutter, the only time the card stopped working, but it was a wide shot of a fence, it wasn't even the actual shot, I was just testing around in the set, so I guess the GH1 is a pretty capable system, specially for the price I paid.

I loved the GH1! I'll eventually upgrade for the GH2, just not now.

I am sitting on the fence, but as each day goes by, I am being pushed into the GH2 camp by reading posts here

One major reason for the upgrade would be the tele extender feature. I wanted a bigger zoom for video and was eying the 100-300 lumix. This feature would give me 360+ mm on the 14-140 with smaller size, faster AF and possibly better image quality all the while being much less bulkier. On the downside I might miss 100-300 might give more subject isolation and shallow depth of field. I am comforting myself that saving on the cost of 100-300 will cushion the GH2 purchase.

To sell GH13 would be another tough decision to make

For what we are doing here, the GH13's are perfect. We have two of them, and although we have barely scratched the surface of the hacks, we are very happy with what we are getting. We may add a GH2 later, but have no plans to turn loose of what we have. Money is kinda tight right now, if we're going to spend, it will be for more/better audio and support. Sound is usually much tougher for us to deal with than picture.

I don't intend upgrading either. My hacked GH1 will do me for now. I don't like AVCHD as a capture codec (at ANY bitrate) so may move away from Panasonic in future, but for the present, the video quality in most situations is absolutely fine - and I'm learning not to shoot in situations where the codec falls apart (like shadow detail).

Phew! - I'm just pleased to know that others are giving the GH2 a miss, as well - at least until Panasonic address some of the issues.

I was all psyched up to buy a GH2, and had one on pre-order that came through on time. I cancelled it because [a] my GH1 is so good noise-wise that I probably wouldn't get much better performance out of the GH2, I think that Panasonic have released GH2's with flaws to meet the Christmas deadline, and later models might be fixed, and [c] because of the banding and lack of 25p. (related to , of course)

Even though you feel that you've made the sensible decision, it's still nice to know that some others don't see the GH2 as a reincarnation of the Buddha, either ;)

I appreciate the smilley, but I don't think anyone imagines this is even close.

It's OK not to want, or not to be able to upgrade. No need to make an issue of it.

Thanks for giving me your approval not to purchase

No issue here, btw - I was just responding to the OP. I'm sure the GH2 is great in some ways, and worthwhile spend for some people - but not for me (not until they fix it, anyway) and it's quite nice to know that I'm not just a lone prophet wandering in the wilderness.

That's all. End of.

You are seeing a much larger migration to the GH2 than you did with the GH1 and you'll see it used more often for it's few extra features alone. It was my intention to get a GH1 when it came out but the lack of video monitoring is a major no go with most of my clients. If they can't see what I"m shooting then I might as well be making a sock puppet production.... It's all about what you need and when you need it...

For all the good hard work on the hack and the inroads on the GH1... you'll see it pay kudos on this model and others.... It's also so darn cheap it's hard not to just consider it a crash camera or a toy or whatever else you want to call it. Shooting still the first week in January will pay for the whole kit and kaboodle and that's always a blessing...

Probably the best thing to call it is, 'a toy for those who are too daft to realise that GH2 horizontal banding issues are all in the mind'

LOL! - 'Optimus Prime' (according to P Bloom) one day, and 'a toy' the next.......poor GH13, good job a few of us still love you ;)
