Anyone seeing bad frames on Shogun?

I was starting to do some testing again with the Shogun, Odyssey O7Q+ on the A7s.

And I ran into this on the Shogun:

Strange, I was recording to the Odyssey and the Shogun at the same time, looping through the Shogun. And I ended up with this on the Shogun, but not on the Odyssey.

I am using an approved Sandisk 240, I was recording UHD on both recorders. When I was reviewing the footage I noticed a flash. And on careful frame by frame review I found this.

I researched a bit on the web and in the Atomos board I found this thread:
http://forum.atomos.com/showthread.php?53803-Problem-in-Recording-4K-from-A7s

I don't know if this is disc related or something else.

I have an old unapproved SSD that does not appear to have this problem. I will find out more as I run more tests this weekend.

Bad frames make me very nervous about using on a job. Even if it only happens every once in a while it is unacceptable IMHO.

Hi olof,

I thought I was the only one. Yes, actually, the exact same thing happened to me and I'm also using a Sandisk SSD 240GB. I had just one bad frame so far, but weird. The Shogun isn't with me right now. But I'll post my sample on Monday.

Had the same problem but only at 30 Frames and actually seen it live on the screen, when switched to 23.98 it was clean again. SSD was samsung 840 1 Tb.
it was the first and last time i recorded 30P for now.

Same problem here, doh! Posted on the Atomos board too. Done with the approved Sandisk 480gb, but I see posts from other drives like Samsung EVO. Drive was freshly formatted in the Shogun, Sony A7s connected with HDMI cable, 4K res, ProRes HQ, 29.97fps.

Hoping it's just a software issue :/

Oh my. That looks like a data corruption problem. Even if it happens only in 0.0001% of frames, that's one every 10 hours of footage, enough for people not using it for important jobs. Hope they fix it with firmware soon...

(if it happens only at higher fps, it may be heat-related)

This is why its good to use proprietary ssd media when recording at high bit rates. Most ssd media isn't good enough - especially after how many times you format it. SSD is a brave new world.

Maybe this is why the odyssey 7q and red and sony use properitary media. Ssd technology is still in its infancy. And also why cfast cards are growing in popularity. Maybe the best format to use with your shogun.

And also why being an early adopter is so risky. Having the latest and greatest seems to always be a bumpy ride where early adopters seem to now be paying to be beta testers.

Never seen a data error from a storage device do this. I think it would be quite bizarre for a data error to come back with a color cast on part of a frame in a CONSISTENT MANNER. I strongly suspect it is a software/firmware issue in the Shogun and not with the SSD.

Is it only at 29.97 or are any of you experiencing this at 23.976 as well?

In the Atomos forum there are reports of this happening with 24p as well. And it seems every SSd is affected, however some HDs are not showing these errors.

I have seen errors like this in RAIDs mostly from bad scsi cables or bad terminator, due to lost data while writing files. I understand there are some "housekeeping" tasks performed by SSDs that basically means they are not available to receive data at times.

I believe this is why Convergent is only allowing their approved and tested SSDs to be used, they also have a proprietary way of writing to the drives. You have to go through a eject step before files can be read by a computer. I also understand that as a SSD fills up many models will slow drastically. And some SSDs do not tolerate a lot of rewrites, or will slow down after many rewrites.

Apparently this is NOT a rare anomaly with the Shogun, according to lots of sources. Because of that, I've decided to go with the 7Q+ instead.
And, both recorders seem to have some recording issues where the video goes magenta. Somebody on another forum has this problem with the Shogun and via his trouble shooting prowess, was able to determine the camera and the recorder were not on the same page. One was recording 1080p, while the camera was feeding 1080i. Seems like an incompatibility warning should have come up. Also on this forum somebody was having what amounts to the same issue but with the Odyssey. Perhaps there's a progress/interlace compatibility issue there as well.

These issues have all been addressed on the Odyssey7Q+. Just yesterday we released a solution for the magenta cast.

Hi Mitch,

Will your company have anymore deals on the 7Q+? I heard that you had 2 free hard drives with the purchase of a 7Q+ a couple months ago.
Now, has a regular SSD or 2.5 drive ever been tested in the 7Q+?

I would love the 7Q but I am being stopped by the price of the Convergent SSD prices. :(

Yes, I want one bad. :)
