anyone run component video over cat6?

Anyone ever tried running component video over cat 5? I've got a run of about 50ft in house wiring that I'd like to get component video and audio.. only have 2, actually are cat6 wires) in wall.. Thought I might try to run down to radio shack make up some bnc to cat6 and see what happens....

Or other ideas?

Tx..

Joe

You'd need to balance and impendance match the signals at both ends.

Camplex makes a system for video cameras that will do this too. It's a few grand.

I was thinking more like 3 bnc to 3 twisted pair via a cat 6 plug... the same on the other side, and see what happens... I expect I'd probably see a deal of noise, but theoretically is should work(shouldn't it?)... Just wondering how much noise would be introduced.... This is just to get the studio picture out to my living room for fun...

Won't work. You'll have all sorts of interferance problems (forget noise).

Good luck, let us know how it goes.

As far as I know you can only run component 20' before you need to have an amplifier for the signal on longer runs.

Don't do it if you need it to look good. Your timings will be all off after 10' or so. Ever wonder why the good component cables cost so much?

Video over cat5/6

Video over cat5/6

Hi Joe,

There are quite a few companies who sell video over cat5 transmitter/receivers. I own a couple sets of Altinex brand that sends both video (component NTSC through HD and RGB up to 1600x1200) as well as audio. I paid about $650 for each pair. Gefen sells a set for around $400. I wish they had them when I bought. Anyway, here is the link.

Great link, thanks!

So, no one has tried these component video "baluns"?

I've heard good things about this company but haven't had the opportunity to try it yet. The prices are certainly right and they claim to go up to 500 feet. If someone tries it, please post back to let us know how it went. This has to blow the Camplex type setups out of the water if it really works. I figured this could work for piping signal back to a switcher along with intercom signals as well over an audio "balun" as they call them..

Well, there is a little more to Camplex... but just for simple signal transmission, this is the sort of thing I was refereing to that you'd need to balace and impedance match to make it work.

If they didn't already do that though how can they claim to run 500 feet? Impossible with unbalanced signals...

That what I mean:
These units do balance and impedance match the line to work.

Just running video signals directly into CAT5/6 won't work.

They have 'EQ' dials on both ends for impedance matching. At least the brands that I have used (Altinex, Gefen, Magenta Labs).
