I'm thinking about setting up a small home studio so I wanna see what I need to get started.

I'm running a PC would I have to buy some kind of converter or something? and are their specific types of microphones I need to buy?

Check out some of the bundles from Musicians Friend. Just ad PC or MAC. I have this mic and it does well for the money. This whole bundle is under 500 bucks.

That's a good way to get started. The biggest challenge of this package, though, would be that you end up with Alesis monitors. Ugh.

ProTools LE is a wonderful program, though. This will get you started. But you aren't going to be able to mix well with:
- cheap, inaccurate monitors
- a room that isn't properly treated

And for recording voice, you'll want to create a dry environment or as close to one as you can get. There's a wall-mounted treatment out there now that can help, or you can build your own gobo out of 3-0 doors and a few sheets of Auralex. A combination of the two would probably work very well.

Get a M-Audio Sputnik Tube Mic, you won't be sorry, this is simply an amazing mic for vocals (And more), especially for the money spent, it's great value.

Man, there are so many variables. Look, I got my degree in audio, and there are so many ways to go. Tell me what exactly your goals are and what you plan on doing, as well as a rough budget, and then we can go from there.

It's like asking "I want to shoot video, what should I get?"

Makes sense.

I wanna record vocals over instrumentals/beats, possibly even put together a compliation. I wont be playing any live instrumentals, I've already got the music ready, all I need to do is put down the vocals, and mix it.

simply record, mix and burn. I'm looking to get the best sound I can, my budget is around $600.

Ive got past experience with Acid pro 3.0, but that was years back and I used a $15 dollar pc mic.
