anyone need a cheap 1k dimmer?

On the website, I couldn't exactly figure out how this works... are there edison plugs at either end of the cable? Or do I have to hard wire this puppy into the power cable to the light?

I'd rather have it removable with the edison plugs.

Thanks!

i had mentioned that the four dimmers i got from harbor freight do not work with my 1000watt lights the item number on the box is 43060 is this the same item number on the 1500 watt dimmers?

Hi:

I have experienced sound interference with them twice. They were big, complex setups with close to 20 lights and I had three or four of these on small practicals. It was one of those, "I am getting a nasty audio buzz" so I just eliminated the variables and it turned out to be the dimmers. It has not done it every time and it seems sort of random but it was definitely caused by the dimmer each time. But I have used them on many other shoots with no issue, almost seemed like perhaps it was a wiring issue with the particular room and these dimmers exacerbated a ground loop or something? What was really weird was that the camera was running on battery too but losing the dimmer turned off the buzz.

I know, it's hard to define a problem when it's not repeatable or consistent.

I'm pretty sure this "dimmer" is a cheap solid state voltage modifier which does weird stuff to the AC sine wave of the power being sent to the lamps. The filaments themselves tend to vibrate at a different frequency than normal which can be heard by the microphones. I have used the standard 650 watt residential type dimmers before and they are problematic when shooting in a room and recording sound for just that reason.

PaPa, did you ever figure out the shipping-to-Canada issue? I'm up here too and am interested to know.

in case this hasn't been answered.

go to busybeetools.com, look for "router controller"... it's on sale for $26.
while not $10, still cheaper than all duty/customs/shipping hassles from harbourfreight.

i just received 2 units, works like a charm, except that at very low position (<40%), my halogen lamps buzz but that's to be expected.

FYI, I stopped by my local Harbor Freight on Thursday to pick up 5 of these. Come to find out over night they raised the price $3 to $12.99 each, so I had to pay $15 more than if I had actually gone the previous day when I first read this thread.

I just received mine, and it seems it won't dim all the way off. At the lowest level the dimmer will go, the lamp is still on, though not as bright as full power, of course. I assumed I would have incremental control of the light output, from 0-100%, but this doesn't seem to be the case. Is this the same for everybody with these dimmers?
