anyone need a cheap 1k dimmer?

im from Canada, can i order from these guys?

i can't put in my postal code, only zip.

Or could someone in the states order 3 for me, and ill paypal you ?

You guys are just discovering these? A bunch of us here on DVX User discovered these in 2005 and ordered hundreds of them.

They work well but beware of them putting audio buzz into your mics. They don't even do it consistently, but I have had a few times when I tracked down a nasty buzz to them. I try to avoid using them when shooting sound.

They are a good deal.

Do they make the sound themselves, or is it from interference? I thought using a balanced line prevented that?

I'm curious about shipping to Canada as well. Do they change the colour temperature of the light when dimming?

i have four of these dimmers and they do not work with my 1000 watt lights they work wnderfully though from 650 and down

Yeah... I'm a little surprised that this is news also... I think we all use these. For the price... yeah, hard to beat. I've heard some people complain of noise, but I've never had a problem.

Hi:

I have experienced sound interference with them twice. They were big, complex setups with close to 20 lights and I had three or four of these on small practicals. It was one of those, "I am getting a nasty audio buzz" so I just eliminated the variables and it turned out to be the dimmers. It has not done it every time and it seems sort of random but it was definitely caused by the dimmer each time. But I have used them on many other shoots with no issue, almost seemed like perhaps it was a wiring issue with the particular room and these dimmers exacerbated a ground loop or something? What was really weird was that the camera was running on battery too but losing the dimmer turned off the buzz.

I know, it's hard to define a problem when it's not repeatable or consistent.

Matt,
It's really the price that I'm drawing attention to - $10 for a 1k dimmer that just works and does not have to be constructed is a hell of a deal.

Hey PaPa - have you tried contacting Harbor Freight directly?
I looked around their site and I can't find any info about international shipping - but I would find it weird if they were unwilling to ship to Canada.
Might want to drop them an email or give them a call.

Yes it is.
Just make sure you don't get the same exact dimmer from ebay for the Buy it Now Price of $45.99!. (The ad has recently been pulled--hopefully for good)>

In regards to audio buzz, always make sure when audio cables are crossing power cables that they aren't running parallel to each other. They should form the shape of a cross if they're touching. This could definitely be a problem with twenty lights! Dan- were you using any wireless mikes when you had buzzing? I haven't used theses with a wireless setup so far.

Yes, I try to be very careful that the cables from the lights and the audio cables never even touch but when they do have to cross, I make sure that they are at 90 degrees at the crossing point.

No, I never use wireless unless I have to, this was with a wired lav and a wired shotgun, typical setup.
