Hi,

Not sure where to post this, but wondering if any of you guys know of an on-board h264 recorder. All of the recorders out there like the Atomos series etc will do ProRes and DnX, but for one client I actually need h264 files that can be sent over the internet immediately because of their small file size.

Any ideas?

Hey Jason, that looks pretty good, thanks for that...can't find specs yet on the h264 encoding...had to register on their site and wait for an approval to get the manual.

I have the Teradek Cube and Blackmagic Design's H.264 Pro Recorder and been using both for more than a few years. I would think for your purposes the Blackmagic Box would be the ticket. You hook it up to your camera by either HD-SDI or by HDMI and it will stream to your laptop/desktop via USB in converted form and go through BM's Desktop Video s/w app called BM Media Express. You can adjust the bitrate on the file down to 2 Mbit. Default is set to 8.5, goes upto 20 Mbit, I believe. With any solution bank on some test time to get things setup and test out your file generation at your given frame rate and the bitrate you are saving to.

EDIT:

The Transvideo solution, if it is shipping and works as billed, would be the best as it would be the simplest. In terms of cost, the Transvideo Starlite HD is the most pricey, The Cube is solution next in line for smaller cost and then the H.264 Pro Recorder is the cheapest. Media Express can be flakey on some machines. It does better with footage that is not 24 fps although it will work with 24 (23.976) frame footage. The Cube, you can throw standard frame rates at it without issue.
