Anyone Know How To Do This Effect....

Doesn't anyone use google anymore?

DON'T tell me you didn't know what to look up. If you don't know they are called scan lines you should not even messing with electricity, let alone After Effects!

I know you're new here. But take a lesson... due diligence is a good way to start. Coming in on your first post and posting a flippin youtube video and saying how'd they do this I wanna know is lame.

I'm sorry, I should've been more specific . I wasn't talking about the scanlines, I know how to do that. It's hard to explain but If you look at the effect you can see they didnt only apply scanlines. I just wanna know the effect they did besides the scanlines.

I'm really not seeing it. Maybe a little blurring, they might have raised the exposure on the highlights a bit. To answer your question, yes it can be done in After Effects. If you have AE, grab some footage and experiment. You might figure it out, you might figure out something better, but you'll figure something out and overall learn a bit about the different things AE does.

Even Google makes people lazy. It's great as a tool, but the majority of people on here won't spend 5 minutes looking at a shot, breaking it down, then going into AE or whatever and try to reverse engineer it. They're lazy and want everything handed to them and have no idea of putting any real work into anything. It's really annoying. I'm self taught, read a lot and played a lot (probably not as much as I should have) but I took time to figure things out. People now just ask "how do I do this effect?"

Just watched the clip, it's just color correction and scan lines. You should be able to figure this one out with a little... time & effort.

Man... I'm right there with you. Love Andrew Kramer... but I've been around longer than his tutorials and almost ANY type of plugin. Gone are the creative days of building a UNIQUE effect yourself.

Though, I usually say it rougher and get banned for it.

Thanks, Loop.

That's one of the worries around here and it's not necessarily a bad thing, I mean it's to keep a certain environment. The problem is that it dissuades knowledgeable people from posting answers. People need a slap in the face sometimes, I mean, sometimes people ask stupid questions that could be easily solved with a few minutes of thought. The Internet has taken thought out of the equation though, people feel like every answer is out in the ether and there's some trick or something they're not in on.

To the original poster, none of this is aimed at you, but more of a general frustration around here sometimes. It's hard to create a good knowledge base when everyone asks the same questions and never puts any effort into finding the answers. Even worse, people reply with links to tutorials to answer people's questions, which creates this endless cycle of relying on crutches. I've been doing this for a while now and I've never watched an Andrew Kramer tutorial for longer than a minute. In the 5+ years I've been learning I've probably completed only a few tutorials. What I have done is read a lot, do a lot of searching, and did a fair amount of trying things out. I'm not saying I'm the bees knees, because I'm not, but I know my craft.

What happens is that you eventually get to a point and realize that there are no special tricks. You realize everything you see can be built with the very basic tools that the software provides. Once you get there you need to understand why you're doing something far more than how. You need to understand basic principles like color & color theory, composition, rhythm, movement, balance, unity, etc. All that stuff. Tutorials don't teach you that. One of the best ways to learn that is read a few books, read some stuff on the Internets and try things out. Make mistakes. Learn by discovery. It may be frustrating at first, but in the end it will serve you much better.

Yes, it was stupid question, I agree. But its not like I came on here first without turning to google or trying to figure it out myself in After Effects. Believe me I've tried and came up with nothing. And not that it matters but I'm so new when it comes to editing, so I rely on tutorials. I guess all I needed was a wake up call and some advise which you guys managed to give me so thank you. Now, hopefully, I won't ask any more stupid questions.

that looks like the prerecorded it and played it on a tv, and then had a camera recording what played on the tv...

Thats what I see

Ah,.. the good old days.

The days when people didn't have fancy shmancy software to gain instant easy access to EFX. The days when they had to build them from scratch with sticky tape and thumbtacks. The days when people took the time to search for things on Google. The days when people took the time to research their questions before posting on DVXUser forums. The days when we had to walk 63 miles to school in 7 feet of snow, ..uphill both ways. Ah yes,.. the good old days.

It's funny though. I remember the days when a newbie could come on a forum like this and ask questions and learn. I remember the days when there were no stupid questions,.. though obviously there are some stupid answers.

Looks like those days are gone too. I always figured if you don't like someone's question, or don't want to help them,.. or even feel they aren't worth helping,.. then don't click "Reply".

Ah,.. the good old days. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to put on my Johnny Cash 8-track, grab some hardtack and coffee, and then go plant some wheat,.. I need bread. Gotta love the good old days.

Funny -- you seemed to have something to say, sage.

Here's my point... if you are too lazy to even explain what it is you are asking... um, the effect at 2:13... then you deserve what you get. Even from me!

Attacks take many forms, don't they.

And yes -- we all help in our way.

It wasn't a stupid question, you fluffy headed ninny noggin. It was a lazy question.

Let me tell you some things that an absolute necessity for you to learn in AE to get started:

1. Masks
2. Blending modes.
3. Track and Luma Mattes
4. Parenting
5. Tracking
6 . Five Effects: Fractal Noise, Fast Blur, Glow, Compound Blur, Displacement Map

Before even you learn them, basic color theory and Levels, Curves, Hue and Sat, need learned.

And did I mention Blending Modes?

I think you guys complaining about the "OLD DAYS" are on the internet far too long. Something as simple as the OP asking about an effect got you all rolled up. This is a web forum, we ask questions, if you can't answer the question, don't hit reply, if you can, hit reply. It's as simply as that. Not everyone is a "asking a question on google" genius. (That's obvious). It really irks me to see these types of responses from you "OLD FOLKS" :Drogar-KnockedOut(D
