Anyone in L.A. want to let me stay with them?

I saw a beautiful (what looked nice) sign that said "Macarthur park" so I thought I'd park my car to get just a couple hours of sleep. Good thing a friend of mine from LA had called me just in time to give me the low down on that place. [/QUOTE said:
What's wrong with Macarthur Park? Everyone on this forum should feel completely safe going there .  :cheesy: :cheesy:

1. You need a car.
2. You need a car.
3. You need a car.

I really like LA, always have, but keep in mind; there are post houses all over the place, Burbank to Santa Monica to Manhattan beach. It sucks to say, ‘sorry I can’t take that job’ just cause you have no car. Don’t even mention buses, that will add hours to your trip. Not only that but people will start to avoid you if you are in the habit of asking for rides.

This is a tough town to be poor in, because the wealth is everywhere, your always being reminded of what you don’t have, food shelter, Top Raman, etc. So yes having a little cash on hand helps stave off the desperation when you are looking for work. Desperation will prevent you from being taken seriously and you will lose opportunities because of it.

That being said, editing is a good field, take it a step further and become a primo sound editor and you should have no trouble getting work.

Sorry if I rambled a bit, too tired to sleep atm, so I’m not entirely coherent.

Either way, don’t be discouraged and good luck to you and your endeavors.

Oh no, no problem, ramble on as much as you'd like. I need all of the advice help that I can get right now. Especially right now that I am in the preperation mode. I am hoping to have a couple DVXer's help me get use to the places when I go out there, because that is the kind of community this is. So, by all means ramble, ramble, ramble... :) Thanks.

Hey thanks Unix

I am wondering though, if I should just stop trying to buy equipment and save for apartment or room expenses? Like I have said a million and one times, I am a editor at heart and I am trying to get a job editing and I already have a powerbookG4, Tiger and Final Cut Studio, so should I just start saving for apartment and room expenses? It's a hard decision.

oh I would say YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
start saving TODAY!!!!!!
or else it's gonna suck ass
I'm trying to be honest

I dont anticipate on having a car when I get out there(yeah I know, first mistake), I will be using a bike. Give me the con's of this plan

you need a car in los angeles.
its really that simple.

there are a very few exceptions, ie: if you live right near a metro rail station and work anywhere near its exits... the network isnt very big and you cant get around everywhere youll need to. other means of public transportation are pretty sketchy...

la = car unfortunately.

get a piece of crap even, but get a car...

my .02 cents.

t

You just reminded me, I must of forgot to mention that these transexuals aren't the same as they are in your home town. The ones in hollywood follow you around, and around and around..

Then I would def. need a car...TO MOW THEM ALL DOWN!
I don't need those people on my tail, both figuratively speaking and literaly LOL

Also, would getting Final Cut Pro certified(by taking FCP certification tests) help out much for getting a job editing or would it just look pretty on my resume?

either way is not gonna hurt u to be "certified" but mostly they wanna see results, I guess.

don't think that when u get here you're gonna be hangin' with Spielberg and Lucas, Tarantino (used to work at a video store that my boss used to go to), etc.
trust me hollywood is not just glamour, and parties, paparazzies, premieres, etc.
YOU"RE GONNA HAVE BILLS TO PAY, long tedious hours, meting deadlines, etc.
if you're coming here just to get experience then that's cool
if you're coming here to get rich......then it's gonna take a LONG ASS TIME
so be prepared

it's freaking hot, a lot of traffic, and there's a lotta people u rather not see.

Screw getting rich. I want to edit film because I love doing it. I'm not trying to be a star or make it big in hollywood. Hell, if I only got paid $8 or $10 for a while, then I wouldn't care or complain because it's my passion. I'm not going to fulfil some superficial dream, I'm going to fulfil a sincere dream, as long as I can edit film or video I'm happy. And I'm trying to do everything possible to get there. I don't have to live in L.A., it's just that L.A. seems to have more work.

Yep, I say go for it. It will add up to a worthwhile experience overall. Just brace yourself, many LA people are not very polite. And oh boy am I sugar coating it! But as many have said, this town is extremely spread out. You will need a car. The motorcycle is a good money-saving idea, but get ready for some of the worst drivers in the U S of A.
