Anyone in L.A. want to let me stay with them?

robert, you sound like a motivated guy. i can recommend a good company to start out at. they hire 1 or 2 runners at $10 an hour every 6 months or so. for that, you will need your own car. the upside is that i went from runner, to machine room operator, to asst editor, to editor in three years. its motion picture advertising (trailers, tv spots, etc) which is a great field because the budgets are huge. top trailer editors (like me!) make over $1,000 a day. plus, you move quickly from project to project so you can build a reel very quickly.
