Anyone in L.A. want to let me stay with them?

hmm...no car in LA? this will be hard, mass transit sucks. a bike is ok but only if you are in the right area, LA is very spread out. the good thing about a bike is you will get plenty of exercise.

if your just starting out check out the glendale/atwater/los feliz area, i say this only becuase along the 5 freeway is a bike path that you can take into burbank/the valley, and glendale is pretty close to hollywood.

santa monica has a ton of post houses, but its pricy. but this would be an ideal location for a person on a bike...cause everything is closer together

I have a set plan, but I don't have any connections down in L.A., but that is what I am working on right now, before I leave. I just hope that I can get some experience, I want to watch local news editors doing their thing, so that I can get an idea of how it is done in a working environment. I have been editing for about two years and currently runing FCP5 and trying to learn as much as I can. I plan on going down there to work in a post house or something similar. And yeah, I won't have a car, unless I really get going on getting my liscense right now.

This plan sounds a little half baked. Not knocking your enthusiasm, just not sure if you're going there with a set plan or improvising. Nothing wrong with improvising, just be aware of the consequences. I'd definitely get a car if I were going there. It aint New York.

yea, but on the good side....Imagine your calf muscles after a few weeks! It should be pretty easy to find a job there though, there's only about four million people to compete with....Lol...I'm just messin w/ ya. Good luck and be safe (wear bullet proof vests)

As I am typing this, I am at the edge of a cliff. I just want to say, thanks for trying to help out, you did your best...aaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!*thud* LOL HA HA HA

I will still try. I just need to really "turn it up a knotch". Everyone wants to be a Director nowadays, so that brings it down to about two or three people to compete with.
Do you know if EVS carries bullet proof vests for people moving to L.A., I'll just call Rush later. LOL

Is there any way you could save up some cash for a used car before you move here? Santa Monica has a lot of post houses, but what if you get a lot of opportunities over at Burbank? If you end up working late nights doing assistant editing or any type of entry level thing type gig - it might be safer to be driving.

I'm gonna have to make a decision soon about this though. Damn, I'm gonna hate going through the whole process of getting a liscense. One of my friends(that I might live with) that came down from L.A. told me that I need to buy a car. I told her that I was saving up for a DVX and other equipment, she told me to think of a car as part of my equipment. I hated hearing that. But either way, I guess I am going to need some motor powered vehicle.

Cars are so cheap in LA, cheaper than any city I lived in. I can tell you, they are very essential, since everything is layed out so far apart. Car or Motorcycle, or else you have to use public transport, which is not underground train speed like Boston or NYC. What is normally a 10-15 drive, will take an hour, counting walking to the bus stop 10 blocks, waiting, then walking from the other bus stop to work, and arriving drenched in sweat. Yeah, you need a car unless the post house lets you sleep on the floor (Been there done that too ).

Robert, how old are you?, yeah, going through the license deal will take some time, but better now then later. Opportunities are EVERYWHERE in LA, people will call you left to right, and I don't think they want to see their editor ride a bike to the station. Lol, you know what I'm saying, I don't think it's the car your worried about, but more about the license, a car is cheap, you can get a running toyota 85? for about 500 maybe, lol. Good luck, looking in a paper called the "recycler" can really help you find cheap cars, I guarantee it!

I heard that the homes and apartments in Compton are really cheap! Man, all I have to say is good luck in LA! :)

Even Comptom's housing prices would scare off most people! Well above the national average by a good margin.

When you get here, I'll show you around the hot spots =)
thanx!
I just know one place to have fun in L.A. it's a bar; if I can remember, it's name it's Sharks but I'm not sure... :undecided

I am 18 and will be 19, by the time I get out there. I have read in books how people spend the night at in the post house. It's like getting my future told to me LOL :) I will work on the car thing though. Hey filmmaker, I want to go to the San Fernando Valley will you show me some "hot spots" when I get there, it might be about 6-9 months. But it will be helpful if you can show me some places to find work. I am young(good and bad) but I am striving to learn all of the technicalalities of FCP5, currently reading all of the books that came with it :(

I just noticed your from France, man, don't leave France. Once I get my career going and all, and make it to the point where I want, I'm gonna move to europe, America is becoming boring and dangerous.
