Anyone in L.A. want to let me stay with them?

LOL :)

Hey folklies,

I will be moving out to L.A. within a year(more like between 6-9months). Where would a good area be to live, somewhere in the west area. I'm not asking necessarily for the best place to live for work or anything, just a decent area in general, living conditions. Any tips, advice or anything would be cool(I can just feel the sarcasm creeping up in this thread). I plan on moving in with about two or three of my friends.

I am guessing that you are referring to the area West of the 405. There are a number of nice areas, Santa Monica being one of the better ones. The down side to this area is the cost. It is some of the highest in the area.

You could check with a rental broker to start with, they will be able to give you an idea of the availability and rates. Also, things like Craig's List

http://losangeles.craigslist.org/

are a good place to start.

Good luck.

Santa monica is definatly one of the better places, hollywood is okay, but theres too much going on, Downtown is worst then hollywood, Sanfernando Valley is pretty calm, but not many parties or anything, and it's about 20 minutes to hollywood.

Good luck.

I lucked into a rent-controlled apartment on N Gramercy in Hollywood last time I moved out there ('90).

What are the odds of finding a $200/month apartment these days?

:)

I want to be in Los Angeles itself, but if there are a couple good places just outside of L.A. then I guess it couldn't hurt. I don't party, so I wouldn't to live a town full of parties, but thanks anyway FilmMakerr I will still look into the Sanfernando Valley and Santa Monica. Ultimately though, I am going there for editing work, and working with people like the users on this site to get experience and everything. But the main thing I need to think about is the safety of me and most importantly the safety of my equipment :) Thanks, and any more info would be waaaayy too cool.

I doubt you could find a $200/month closet in todays market!

Win the lottery, what good would that do me? Would someone give me some real advice please...win the lottery, and do what with the money...

LA is pretty big, do you want to be close to any particular area of LA? Santa Monica is a commute, and an awful one at that to LA. Don't move east of LA off the 10 because traffic is even worse coming from there and avoid the 60 as well.

Silverlake is really close and nicer than downtown. I grew up in Glendale, which is close. Burbank and Pasadena are nice too. The suburbs are not far at all, but with todays gas prices you don't need to be far to spend a fortune for your gas.

Atwater is close too.

Just West of LA is Culver City

Well, first off, I most likely won't have a job when I get out there. I am preparing for an editing job right now. And I dont anticipate on having a car when I get out there(yeah I know, first mistake), I will be using a bike. Give me the con's of this plan, forget the pro's(there aren't any :(). I have already talk to some people about it, but I need some other opinions. I am really trying hard at getting experience for a video editing job.

if you are relying on the bike and bus and want to be close to downtown, than silver lake, atwater, culver city, inglewood, and I would say glendale too are workable. I don't know how much they charge for the bus nowadays.

you might want to consider burbank. I would imagine there are a lot of jobs opportunities there too.

Sweetness. I will def. tell my friend about those areas, since he hasn't really been looking for places lately

Robert, many areas of hollywood and downtown are horrible. You can hear gun shots, and you'd be lucky if they don't fly into your window. Pimps, whores, 'thugs', on every corner of the street. You want a peaceful place, Santa monica is a rich place, the rent is high, but your secure, you've even got the beach, so you can go relax down there. Parts of sanfernando valley are great too, like Northridge, Tarzana, Woodland hills, Topanga, but like I said, it's around 20 minutes away from hollywood (freeway) and the freeway is always busy.

Ah man FilmMakerr, that is exactly what I want. I don't want all of that sleezy, scumbaggy, homocidal stuff where I live. Thanks a lot. I gotta keep an eye out for those places, I think my options are opening up and the future looks optimistic.

You said you don't have a car or job right....You could afford rent if you win the lottery. And if you still have any left over after that (doubt it), you can fly barry green's ass over here to teach me how to use this damn camera! I bought his book but can't read!!

This plan sounds a little half baked. Not knocking your enthusiasm, just not sure if you're going there with a set plan or improvising. Nothing wrong with improvising, just be aware of the consequences. I'd definitely get a car if I were going there. It aint New York.

hahahahah, that's funny lol.

Robert, I just read that you'll be using a bike. Using a bike, and you want to work with editing correct? so you need to work with industry people, you need to live in hollywood I guess, but try the safer side, i've seen great apartments there, but i don't know the area much well. Only thing I used hollywood for is to enjoy a night out, I don't think I'd ever live there unless it was for school, or something else, with a roomate of course.
