Anyone have GH1 "lug failure"?

I read a review for the GH1 on Amazon. One individual wrote, "Remove the neck-strap links from the lugs on the camera body. They make noise (bad for video), plus they torque the lugs, which (according to other reviews) has caused some lug failures. You can replace them with small zip-ties, or small finger-loops of 1/8" paracord (my preference), or use a wrist strap."

I have had the one on the left side of the camera pull off. I found a guide online somewhere (will see if i can find the link) of how to open the camera and screw the nut back on. When I opened the camera I found the nut, plus removed the one from the other side, put some high strength thread locker (loctite) on the threads, tightened it up, then also put some JB Weld over the nut securing it to the chassis that the lug bolt goes through. used my GH1 for over 6 months like this quite extensively while on a boat, with no further issues. Now, I use a black rapid strap and got the apapter piece for the Bogen Manfrotto quick releases. I use this on both my GH1 and GH2 and completely removed the "earings" from the cameras, so all you see it the little lugs with nothing hanging from them to make noise or get in the way. Highly recommend the BR setup with the Manfrotto adapter piece. I shoot both video and take photos everyday, ranging from handheld, to tripod with fluid head, to gorrillapods, to should mount. They all have the Manfrotto RC quick releases making attachment quick and secure, and never have to unscrew anything to attach my black rapid straps.

hope this helps

If you search the forum there was a very active thread some time ago which was all about this issue. Apparently, this was a very common issue in GH1. Mine had the same issue but I fixed it with the help of the guide and never had any issue after that (btw, mine is up for sale if you are interested).

I was scared to death of lug failure when I got my first GH1 last year. That was about the time lug failure was showing up. So the posts I was reading were current then and placed by people who had owned their cams for some months time at least. Since then posts on lug failure appear to have trailed off substantially. That indicates TO ME that Panasonic probably addressed the issue back then in their manufacturing process. The GH1s I have now are January 2011 productions and I am not concerned about these being subject to lug failure. I could be all wrong too, but that is how I am addressing it with mine.
