Anyone have a B4 2/3" ENG Lens on their AF100?

I'm interested to see if anyone is using a 2/3" lens on their AF100. My biggest question is that you need to use a 2x "doubler" to cover the sensor, but how is that looking once the 2x is engaged?

Every time I've engaged the 2x on a Betacam or DVCPro camera, I felt that the image went to crap. Lost resolving power, loss of light, lots of CA, etc.

I know some lenses will perform better than others, but I'm interested to see what people's experiences are & if they have any samples.

Those are exactly what I was looking for. Only thing I'm wondering about was what was the f stop & focal length for those videos. Thanks for the help. (But if anyone has more to share, please do.)

I did, I had a non-optical adapter on it and the the results to be unsatisfactory. Blurred corners at wider focal lengths. Abel Cine has a very nice and expensive optical adapter that work very well. It is specifically made for the 3 CCD convergence that B4 mount lens are made for.

Can you post any examples with and without the Abel Cine adapter? The only comparison I know of is the link I provided above. What I find odd about this comparison is that the SD lens with mechanical adapter compares very well with the HD lens and Abel Cine adapter. But when the adapters are swapped; HD lens with mechanical adapter and SD lens with Abel Cine adapter, a clear difference is seen (SD lens is better).

Even at 200% the SD lens with mechanical adapter looks nearly the same as the HD lens with the Abel Cine adapter.

Paul F & editman, do you know what f stop? It seems like there was really deep DOF, which I would expect outside if you were f8 or lower, but I would've thought I would've seen some shallower DOF on some shots.

A lot of the samples look like the DOF of a 2/3" camera. I know you're using those lenses, but a 50mm B4 (or 25mm x2) lens & a 50mm SLR lens will have the same DOF. So is everyone just shooting wide open with SLR lenses & then the sample above have closed irises?

The sunset looks nice, but everything is in the distance & when focused that far away you have a much deeper DOF even wide open.

Paul F, I was surprised with the comparison you gave at how well the lenses held up to each other (or can it be just web compression that is equalizing everything out). I was watching it on a laptop & need to re-watch on a higher resolution monitor & see if I see more of a difference.

The gearjones comparison with the SD lens was impressive- some of the best footage, along with editman's, that I've seen with a B4 lens.

James- which non-optical adapter and lens were you using?

I must admit that as I've still got the old Betacam with nice Fujinon 2x lens, I'd thought about 'going large' and using this to get going with larger formats - but everybody said how dreadful SD glass was. These results suggest that 'dreadful' maybe wasn't the right word?

So is the concept of using SD glass sound? I'm really confused now?

I don't recall. Of course, it is stopped down since it was a bright day. But I can't guess what the f-stop might have been.

Yes, please share your views on this after a better look.

I have a coupe of SD Canon J21 w/2x lying around collecting dust if anyone's interested.
One doesn't have a servo rocker grip, the other does. Been sitting around unused for years.
PM if interested.

I think I had my lens at F1.8-2 and I think that dof is comparable to a 2/3" camera which to me is great. Now I can have my AF101 look like an ENG camera in 2/3" size also. I don't see the use of B4 lenses as something you'd do to achieve shallow dof. It's the versatile range and powered zoom that is key.

Fujinon 8x15 f1.7 w/doubler mounted via Ciecio7 B4 adaptor and w/o zoom control.
Not bad - versatile but always shoot at f/8 or above.
Not looking for shallow DOF with this lens.

i mounted the fujinon a15x8bevm-28b 2/3 lens on the af100 and it was terribly soft around the corners.

Scott, your setup looks nice! Do you shoot at f8 and above purely for sharpness sake? If you go lower does it get too soft with that lens? Math wise, the double would just double your lowest aperature setting right? Would you be able to go down to f4 on that lens?

Good luck!!!
