Anyone had experience with a Nikon 28-70 2.8 on the AF100

Investigating some older nikkor zooms and the 28-70 2.8 looks interesting. I understand it's pretty big and heavy, any problems with the AF and Novoflex mounts?

No problems. Its an excellent sharp lens. It is not a Zoom. It is varifocal.

Dont know about your adapter. I use Adaptimax.

EDIT : It wont Auto focus on an AF100

I don't have the Nikon but I have the Tokina version of that lens and it's really handy on the AF100. I have used it for talking head stuff where I need to quickly frame.

Personally I find those 1st gen nikkor AFs pretty unpleasant in the focus action. I have the full manual nikkor 28-85 3.5-4.5 which i prefer even though it is slower..

The novoflex was one of the more popular adapters when the AF100 was introduced. I think it's made in Germany. I have Nikon primes ranging from 20 - 180 and it can handle the 180, anything larger would probably need some additional lens support.

I have the Tokina 11 - 16 and 16 - 50. The 11-16 is an amazing lens, the 16-50, not so much. It seems to be softer than all my other lenses and while I know that is to be expected to some degree when comparing a zoom to a prime, I think the 16-50 is probably substantially substandard in comparison to some of the more expensive options like the Nikkor.

From the research I've done so far, and given my needs, I'm thinking that the Nikkor 17-35 and 28-70 would give me the overall focal range I need without breaking the bank. I looked at the new Panny M43 lenses and while I think they are excellent I'm not sure I want to get that far into M43 specific glass.

Thank for your thoughts.

Regarding adapters, Metabones' is the best I've tried, less expensive than the Novoflex and with a far more positive lens lock, and the best aperture ring mechanism available when using lenses that need it... Plus there's the SpeedBooster version if that suits your fancy.

And there are no viable Autofocus possibilities with Nikon or indeed any non-4/3 adapted glass.

Also regarding lens choices, had you considered the Nikkor 17-55? Very sharp, and it will work with the Novoflex and Metabones adapters (with aperture rings) and is one of the DX lenses that works well with the SpeedBooster. You can add a relatively inexpensive 85mm prime for the long end.

If range is more vital than ultimate speed, the Sigma 17-70/2.8-4 may be a useable, inexpensive single-lens option.

Hope that further complicates matters for you enough ;)

Correct....its a very versatile pair of quality lenses because of the minimum focus range overlap.

...but do get a rod support system for them.

I'll second the idea of looking at the 17-55. What an awesome lens on the AF-100!!! Stays on ours for the majority of our talking heads and B-Roll. As noted above--- add an 85mm f1.4 or f1.8 to the mix and you have a great combo.
