Anyone ever used a Fostex MR8 MKII for a field recorder?

I have a chance to buy a Fostex MR8 MKII for a very reasonable price. I have a Rode NTG-2. Has anyone used any of the portable digital multitracks as a field recorder. Will I have problems using the NTG-2? I am a musician and the addition of a digital multitrack with USB is appealing since I can use it with a lot of the Sound editing software I already own. Thoughts?

You know, it is not bad, it just isn't as good as some of the other solutions. The main drag is that it is 16 bit, not 24 bit. So what;s the big deal? Well, those extra bits really do give you a bigger margin of error when setting levels. For less than $500 you can get a really nice midrange interface like the Mackie Blackbird or any of a dozen others. For a bit more you can get a nice standalone like the Tascam DR 680.

Yep I'm torn, I can get the Fostex for $150 but even though I have read about the problems with the Rode and the H4N($280) I have heard some pretty decent sound recorded with it. I really want the 2488 neo because it's a better solution for my music but not in the budget right now. I'm not quite sure how it would be for film sound and syncing. My inclination is to wait. Thanks for the info.

Actually the the main drag is it only records at 44.1K or 22K, and you need 48k.
Also it only records two tracks at a time. This is a music sketch pad device and is not at all suited to film production work.

Those are big drags as well! I used one for a recording and voice over once, and I thought the sound quality was decent, but the box has too many limitations. What a shame they didn't make it full-featured.
