Anyone ever try recording audio on an iPod Touch or iPhone?

I heard that some musicians use their iPod Touch or iPhone to record music tracks. I was wondering if any DSLR filmmakers have tried this yet as an alternative to a Zoom H1, H4 or Tascam external recorder.

I'd much rather spend $200 for an iPod Touch that can record good audio and do tons of other stuff instead of springing for a dedicated recorder that only does one thing.

But I wonder what kind of microphone you need... can you just plug anything into an iPod Touch/iPhone?

And is there any way to mount these on the hotshoe of your DSLR?

Not sure what kind of DSLR your using, but, the iphone or itouch would be so useless for this application, you're better off recording direct to DSLR - which again is a poor option IMO.

They're probably using THIS. But it limits you to 44.1kHz audio. By the time you've paid $300 for an iPod Touch plus the $150 for the Protrack, you've almost paid for a Fostex FR-2LE.

I agree with the previous posts in terms of spending $ on an iPod Touch vs spending on a dedicated recorder. However if you were going to buy an iTouch for personal use anyway, you might want to check out Blue Mic's Mickey. It's a stereo mic that attaches to the iPod port. Blue Mics has a free iPhone app and there are low priced apps for it as well. I think Bias Peak has one. I haven't used it, but I hear it works surprisingly well.

And it leaves you with nothing but the stereo mic to use, which is not going to do you any good for dialog in the field. At least the Alesis unit has XLR inputs... but again, limited to 44.1k.
