Anyone ever had their GH2 FAIL to switch off?!?! :-O

Hi guys

Just got a GH2 last night and done some very brief tests. Basically, I've just been getting used to the interface and trying out some stills (Transcend fast SD card still in the mail system....).

Today a couple of times, I tried to take a self-portrait by switching the LCD round to reverse, and holding the camera towards myself. Not sure whether one of my hands pressed some sort of button on the camera (it's quite an awkward maneouvre to do), but suddenly noticed LCD and EVF were off. Checked power switch and found it was in the ON position. So then switched camera OFF but green light stayed on! In the end, had to remove battery to power the machine down. This has now happened twice, but only when I've tried this self-portrait maneouvre.

Has anyone else had this issue of the displays going blank and the camera not switching itself off? Have I got a dud? :-O

Yep! GH1 hangs sometimes, and refuses to turn off (don't know about GH2). In this case as you know, remove the battery.
Sometimes, higher bitrates (out of card's capacity) crashes the camera, and we can't even turn it off.

But can't say exactly which buttons (or combination?!!) are responsible for this, in your case. Maybe you pressed REC (red) button, which started Recording Video on slower card. Check if you put finger in front of EVF so the LCD turns off. And if camera Freezes in this situation, it just can't 'turn on' the LCD again, it's hanged.

Hope this Helps. :) Let us know what you figure out.

Thank you very much indeed RaviSun3D :-)

It's nice to know that my camera may not be a complete lemon! I wonder if you might well be correct about the red button for movie making? I will need to test again, but my 1Gb (!) card is extremely cheap and slow (Tesco brand!) while I await my Transcend coming through the mail. Hopefully it was the slow card that hung the machine.

Kind regards.

Hmm - on testing, am not sure that was the issue. Will keep playing and see if it recurs. Either way, it's nice to know I don't have to worry if the camera hangs occasionally....

I haven't yet had my GH2 hang on my yet but the hacked GH1 did quite often with a slow card or with very high details scenes at high bit rates.

Hope yours was just a random occurrence and doesn't happen regularly!

No problems whatsoever with our GH2. We have already used it in quite few session with no problems.

I had a problem with power save the first day: even though it was set for 5 minutes it did not go into power save and emptied the batterie. I flushed the settings and reset all my settings again ( hours of twiddly fumbling) and since then it behaves well. you might have a warranty case?

Same problem here, with a stock GH2. Sometimes it just stops to react when I'm in play mode. Then I need to remove the battery :/

I had the same issue the first day, and then it occured to me that I had hacked GH1(3) footage on there. I catpured the footage, formatted the card, and haven't had any issues since.

My GH1 used to do it when I used Transcend cards (before the hack). Never happens with Sandisk cards....after about 50 weddings. Actually, both of my GH1's seem to get more reliable with age/use. Except for the sloppy lens mounts. :(

Thanks to everyone for their replies. It seems to be playing nice today so far. Bit worried about the above post though, as I'm waiting on a Transcend 16Gb Class 10 card through the mail :-O

Sounds to me like your too damn ugly for the camera to wanna take your picture, Try putting a bag over your head, and see if it continues to happen. If it takes the pic with the bag on, then you know your gonna need some plastic surgery. It's actually a great tool to measure the different degrees of ugly.:)

Boy, did I jinx myself with this post! My GH1 locked up tonight at a wedding reception! (Fortunately, just while I was shooting a bunch of goofy dancing stuff...and not during the ceremony...which would probably have caused me to lose the entire service.) I was using a Sandisk card. It hasn't done it in like a year or more....and that's shooting a wedding almost every weekend. Shooting weddings with a piece of consumer gear is always a gamble! With DV tape all I ever got was "sparklies" from dirty heads. Now with SDHC, I get total write failures. :D
