Does anyone elses HVX footage have banding in low gradation areas, like white walls with a graded shadow? It seems the cmaeras natural noise kinda covers it up, but when the cam is set to produce minimal noise, im gettting banding. Not that i am complaining i rather have banding than noise. I also am wondering if its from RAYLIGHT??? any comments?

maybe my search button is broken cause when ever i search idont find crap....

i was wondering more or less if its dvcpro based or raylight based artifacting. apparently its dvcpro based if everyone else ees it.

Hey Tim,
How do the sgpro and go35 compare i am looking into getting one of them, but i also am thinking of updating to the HVX200 at some time from my DVX so i want something that can handle the crossgrade. Also I would prefer to be able to operate the adapter at a range of f stops from shallow to deep dof. Any opinions would be greatly appreciated.

In 8-bit, banding and noise are kind of interlinked. From my old days of using a Quantel Graphic Paintbox for transparancy retouching to the present day, if there's a subtle gradation, ie in skies etc, you can expect to see stepping/banding. There just aren't enough steps in 8-bit (256 colours per pixel per channel) to describe certain ranges of colour.

Our solution was always to add noise/grain.

If I have the problem in Shake when working on 8-bit footage then I bump it to 16-bit (16-odd-thousand colours per pixel per channel).

Watching 'Thin Red Line' on DVD, it kills me when the camera pans into the sky on certain shots, or there's loads of subtle fog - it quantises/bands/steps like mad. It's an inherant nature of 8-bit footage.

hey electric, thanks for the info. yea i heard the old XL1 used to band like crazy because it was a nice clean signal. canons reccomendation was to shoot with +3 db gain. add some noise to cover up the banding.

but seriously. for the price what do you want ya know.... its not like the hvx is a red, or a viper.....

Banding rings or banding in low gradation areas, like white walls with a graded shadow is something you see typical in HVX200 material. Generally, banding is a 8 bit behavior, (256 colors) not something you see in 3*8 24 bit images.

What it is, I don't know, clustered colors in the dvcprohd compression? If you color correct or compress with extreme curves adjustments, it's possible to have midtone areas look darker than areas in shade and so create bands of color instead of gradients. (solarization and posterization)

If I see the typical banding, for me its a sign that it is shot with the hvx.
