First, thanks for your help. I learned a lot. So, now....

I got Vegas plus 200GB external HDrive! (both bouhgt in the last two days on ebay, now I am waitnig for shipping)

In a week I am buying dvx100AE (PAL). In May I shoot my first feature! After May....

...I will edti on my laptop without additional monitor.

I would like to ask for some thoughts about editing PAL footage in Vegas like:

Should I capture all my raw footage on external HDrive, next view it and decide which footage I want to actualy edit .. and next ... edit? ****, probably I already know it :o

Just tell me if I am on a good track. I did not do editing before :-[

Thanks,
Voytek

Yup, sounds about right.

In the old days, there was the process of 'logging and capturing', where you made note of all the clips that you were to use in a project by their timecode ('logging'), and then captured those specific clips. However, while I still consider that a good practice for an efficient workflow, hard drive capacities are so large these days, that it's much easier to just capture the entire tape and use what you want for your project, and delete what you don't use later.

The good thing about Vegas, as well as a lot of other NLE's is that you can activate what's referred to as 'DV start/stop detection', so that during capturing, the program breaks up your captured tape into separate files wherever you started/stopped recording. This is nice because you then have multiple smaller clips to look through instead of one huge clip that you have to view again and again to find the clip you want.

Hope everything gets delivered soon, have fun!

I'm curious... does the start/stop detector in these programs work if you've blacked the tape before shooting? I have used it in XDV, but only on tapes that weren't pre-blacked.

I'm pretty sure it does (tho I haven't captured a blacked tape for awhile) as I believe the capture program looks at the date/time information (not the timecode) to determine where recording had been started/stopped.
