Anyone Doing Live Keying With The Hvx?

Spartacus

Been trying to find out how I could save me a lot of postpro time.
I would like to instantly key my greenscreen footage BEFORE recording it to HDD.
Maybe a Kona or Decklink via HVX component-out does the trick...?
The Edirol/Pana mixer?
I did mention I want to do it in HD did I ? ;o)
Or maybe DVrackMonitorBox could implement this "tiny feature" hehehe...
Any help apreciated, thanks!

Spartacus,
i have no idea whether this is technically possible or not with software, but it seems to me that it is doubtful you would get good keys this way.
Keying is notoriously fussy and people have to go through all kinds of extra steps to deal with hair, spill, reflections , glasses etc.
i don't see how you could trust that you would do a good enough job on the fly.

It's pretty easy to do with a hardware mixer but you need to add your composites before it leaves the mixer. The last time I checked component HD didn't support an alpha channel so your keyed out green would probably end up being replaced by the default background color if you try and ouput with no BG. Good luck.

Well the product ends up in the web, high-res though, but nevertheless it ain´t compositing for cinema...
I read that the kona and the decklink offer hardware keying, this would at least save me the time fo rendering out the key, but I´d like to try that out first...
I´m all over quality most of the time, but with budget restraints "just enough is good enough" sometimes...
Most people use multiple keyers and masks to pull a clean key, so I know what to expect from a one button hardware solution;o)

I'm sure it's possible but I wouldn't try it unless you're working for live TV and putting in a map for the weather man. Keying takes a lot of work to look natural and it's just not something you should rush through.

There is this keying tool from the dvrack team, i am not sure if it can do a live capture, but its worth checking the site..!

i just checked it quickly..called "ultra" (http://www.seriousmagic.com/products/ultra/index.cfm), but no idea if it does realtime..id assume...maybe!

I`ve look at Ultra before, but since we moved to the Mac I neglected it...
I`m not sure it does live keying (they state DV preview keying on laptops though), but it uses GPU acceleration, they claim to do realtime HD keying - sounds promising...
They also support QT now...
So far I´ve looked into DVmatteBlast, a realtime keyer for Motion, but it didn´t satisfy me - BUT THEN I took the RT Ultimatte built in in Motion and it instantly looked good!
Have to play a little with it still, but could be at least a solution for the long render times...
Thanks to everybody!

Spartacus,
Keep us informed about this after you end up trying stuff out. I love to find out I was wrong about things.

Lenny,
we (well our compositing freelancers) normaly use AE or Shake for keying, inner core matte, outer core matte, edge matte, detail matte, whatever...
Thing is I`ll have to do hour long seminars, that´ll end up as flash8 movies with alpha channel on a website, the key should be good of course, but there´s no color matching, blending, wrapping, relighting or anything alike envolved.
For me it ain´t compositing it rather is stenciling-galore, so I approach the job from an optimal workflow position, not a quality one (though I´d love to do this in an HD-SDI realtime keyer with realtime multiformat encoding studio...)
