Anyone do GH1 VS. T2I low light testing yet?

I've not seen much in the way of side by side comparison for low light for these two cameras.

I have a GH1 but need something that can do lower light (for effect! don't give me that whole need to use proper lighting stuff because I know that already) but without the banding that the GH1 gets when underexposed.

I was thinking of getting a T2I and using that for certain shots where I couldn't use the GH1.

Any thoughts? Any videos?

I'm not too keen on comparing videos made by the manufacturers(I.E. the canon stock "low light" videos on their websites) since we don't *really* know what's been done to them.

This is from a shoot I did in downtown Ft. Worth with my Tamron 17-50 2.8 wide open at 1600 and 3200 iso and the Canon 50mm 1.8 wide open at 800 and 1600 iso to give you a good idea of what it looks like. To my eyes, it's pretty clean in low light.....

I'm pretty sure the t2i is better, it goes to 6400 ISO and you have to trick the GH1 into doing 3200. I'm not sure if the expanded 12800 ISO on the canon applies to video though, can someone chime in on that with tests?

One complaint I do have vs. the entry level Canons is that they do have more grain. Sure you still get nice video, but the GH1 (once you cure the banding) is fairly grain free. the T1i and T2i footage I've seen has noticeable grain in what appears to be ample light - some guy posted 3200 1.8 footage of his toddler daughter indoors and there was a lamp in the room somewhere and, even though the footage still looked sharp and nice, I saw some grain there. http://www.vimeo.com/9737942

Granted not really noticeable and still clean.

Though I'm anxious to see it pushed to the max.

I'm hoping 2.8 at 6400 will at least compare to using the 20mm 1.7 on a GH1 at 3200 (1600 with the ex. comp pushed all the way)

Hey Chris,

Do you have the VC version of the Tamron or the original non VC version.

I'd like to add another body but torn on the T2i or waiting on the GH2/Sony DSLR.

I got the VC version. I don't think I need it with the Spiderbrace but it's nice to have just in case. If you only get one lens for the t2i, the Tamron (or Canon 17-55) should be it. In fact I have another arriving tomorrow for my second t2i. It's a solid walk around lens that you could probably keep on for most of the day. I'm very happy with it.

How do you like the spiderbrace?

I really want a DV Multi Rig Pro and not sure about giving up the spring pod for smoother motion and the ability to attach accessories to the arms. Seems like the spider brace would require two hands on it at all times to remain steady

Wow that vid looks really good. Thanks Chris W.

It makes me wonder if the GH1 can do something like this without banding. I haven't had the chance to shoot in a situation like this.

Some people say that the GH1's ISO numbers aren't properly calibrated with the real world, that it's numbers are low, say 400 is really closer to 1000, etc.

Maybe I should just bite the bullet and pick a body up when they become available and return it if I don't like it?

I think returning the camera would be the last thing you want to do once you shoot video with it. It's just amazing. Just be sure to set aside $700 or so on good glass. Don't go cheap. Get the good stuff right off the bat.

t2i or Voightlander 35mm 1.2? decisions decisions.

Also - chris, did you try longer lenses with your shoulder brace without IS? Any clue how long you can get? IE - would 100mm no IS on a brace work?

I just got an old Vivitar 70-210 on Ebay for $29 so I'm going to give it a shot when I get it in. I imagine there will be some wobbles but nothing worse than hand holding a 70-200 with IS on. That's my guess at this point. I'm planning on doing a vintage lens shoot out when all my stuff comes in and I'll post the results (along with the video).
