Anybody Know Anything About Voice Disguisers?

So I was just wondering if anybody can tell me how to obtain the deep baritone voice effect made popular by the TV show DELOCATED or documentaries like EXIT THROUGH THE GIFT SHOP or pretty much anything on MSNBC where they black out the person and disguise their voice. Done very little research but I've come across some interviews that elude to something being placed near or around the voice box. I've also come across some questionable software. I was hoping for some way to do it in my NLE software, but I'll take any insights really.

I don't know how the networks do it, but if I needed to do it in something like Pro Tools, I would do some sort of voice doubler, with the doubled voice being pitch shifted down, and then pitch shift THAT down, and then maybe some sort of soft flange, or something that isn't over the top, but makes it near impossible to "reverse" the process of what I did. I've heard some voice disguisers that were just pitch shifting, and people were able to undo that pitch shift to get the original voice sound very easily. But again, I've never done anything like this for the networks, so what they do could be totally not what I said. It really depends on what tools you have at your disposal. The key is to make sure someone can't "undo" easily.

They're discontinued, and go for a pretty penny on eBay, but if you can get your hands on a BOSS VT-1 Voice Transformer, you'll be all set.

The simple fix (software-based, plug-ins) is pitch shift.

STUDIO VOICE (deep voice)
ADOBE AUDITION
Perform the steps in this order:
1. Amplitude ->Normalize
2. Time Pitch ->Stretch->Lower Pitch->Ratio 116 for my voice ~ 107-110; (Set to 133 or higher for the very deep distorted voice similar to what you are asking for)
3. Delay Effects->Studio Reverb->Drum Plate (small)->Adjust Room Size Slider down to make tighter; room size set down to 9.5 - 5.2
4. Amplitude ->Normalize
5. Amplitude->Hard Limiting (process)->Limit MaxAmplitude to: -3 db (optional)
This will get you started in the right direction. If you want a more distorted voice, you make a bigger adjustment in step 2.

no kidding one's at $450 at the mo. Well I got Pro Tools so not a total loss. On that same note I suppose that getting a robot voice would be very similar.

I think that I saw a plug-in on the Pro Tools website called something like "Cosmonaut Voice". I think it was around $100 and from what I recall (it was about two years ago when I saw it), it's a plug-in that allows vocal effects and distortion. Might be worth looking into.

Cosmonaut Voice is more for doing Walki Talki kinds of stuff.

The "robot" voice was often done with a Vocoder. You can plugin versions, the real thing s probably $$$$.

If you search this forum the whole disguise the voice thing has come up a number of times and there are at least two good threads on it. Pitching down is most of it. You want to pitch down with out slowing it down, it's an option in the PT plugin.

Like this?

My DAW of choice is Reaper. With that I did a pitch shift that retains tempo (so no time-shift) and then used the plug-in Kjaerhus Chorus (free). Any plugin will work but this has a pitch shifter (also called modulation) so that it really messes with the pitch and even if someone can re-adjust the pitch the chorus modulation effect still disguises the voice.
